This was a fun read.  Dan Savage is occasionally also a guest on This American Life.  There's a hilarious story he told on This American Life about his adoptive son and his poodle.  He and his partner had been determined that the boy should adopt a manly dog to break the "gay stereotype"  but the boy insisted on a poodle.  All I remember is I was chocking with laughter during the story.

I used to love reading his column when I lived in SF. One of my favorite columns was during the '00 election, where he gave everyone fairly terse responses to their questions then segued as well as he could to a rant about the upcoming Prez. election. Good stuff. Of course his normal columns are funny as well although I stopped reading them when I didn't live somewhere where it was in print in a local weekly anymore. He was just here, at Carnegie Mellon University, and I found out the day after, so missed it. :<
