I'm wondering, what's the difference between christian and catholic?

"Christian" refers to any one of thousands of religious sects based on the Christian Scriptures (a collection of mythohistorical legends and comentary written during the first and second centuries C.E. and finalized as a collection in 367 C.E.).

"Catholic" means "universal", but is often used to refer to the "Roman Catholic Church", a western Christian sect in Communion with the Bishop of Rome (the Pope).

Steven and Rebecca should record their lectures and have them available for download, since I think many people would be interested in hearing them.

I agree, I would love to be able to hear these.

I'm a pretty young skeptic.. still at an age where I could be on Kids Say The Darndest Things (I probably wouldn't say anything that darned.) I guess I've got nothing on that Rosa girl, though.

No national politicians I can think of, but as far as athletes, Lance Armstrong is an outspoken atheist, and I've heard that Pat Tillman was also, but I'm not sure.

Pat Tillman may have been killed (or abandoned) for being an atheist.

John Adams and James Madison may have been atheists, but they predate television and radio.  Today they would find it difficult to be elected to public office.

Here's a list of atheist politicians including former governor of California Culbert Olson.

Was he "out" when he was governor?

I don't think so, but it says he became an atheist at an early age.  I guess what matters here is if he was out at the time of his election.

Yeah, I'm sure that would have made a world of difference.

Currently the only out-of-the-closet atheist in the Senate or the House is Bernie Sanders from Vermont.

Something that comes to mind is a quote by former president George Bush Sr. when asked if he recognized the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists, he replied:

"No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God."

Clarification?  Pat Tillman seems to have been co-opted for so many 'causes' already.  I hope it (he) can be laid to rest sooner rather than later.

Initially, that sounds rather irresponsible and conspiracy minded when presented off-hand.

If you want to differentiate, use Catholics and Protestants. The latter seems to be pretty much the evolutionary ancestor of all the flavours of Christianity around today.

What about Orthodox, Coptics et cetera?

I was once asked if whether I was a Catholic or a Christian.  That's more or less like asking if someone if they believe Santa uses eight reindeer or nine, and just assuming that they believe the rest of the story.  However, it's also a question only a evangelical would ask.  Most Christians, like Anglicans or Orthodox, accept that they are different sects of the same religion.

I liked this week's Skeptical Puzzle because it was the first one in a long time that I could actually figure out.

Based on the answers so far I think I have got the puzzle correct for the first time in ages, probably since the cannonball one!
