Karma is the most important non-existent force in the universe.  As a classmate of mine put it in her paper presented to a course on Descartes: "It's like the great wheel of life that spins around and around the universe as it spins, with wheel spinning gives to anyone what he deserve."

So, I first noticed this new thing in the Greek mafia thread, and was totally confused. I only saw it on Belg's name at first, and thought it was some weird in-game thing - since smiting is in fact an action in our game.

I just wanted to share this story in an appropriate forum.

Thanks.

While any potentially good idea can be exploited by malicious users, "karma" is especially susceptible to abuse, mostly in the form of "karma whoring", as seen quite often on slashdot...

Let's take a look at the two major forms of karma whores (these examples are written based on the format of the slashdot forums).

The Popular Stance Karma Whore is the easiest to pull-off:

Quote
Taking a popular stance is an easy way to acquire karma.

Popular stance karma whores are unique in that you do not aim to draw responses: your only marks are the moderators themselves. You want to be quick, and in that quickness you want to draw steadfast support and approval: keep it simple.

The first step is to be fast and post before there are 40-0 comments. Posting beyond this point runs the risk of ending up being redundant. For SGU, this will likely apply to the first page or two.

The first thing you must do is speak as your marks do. You must appear to be "one of them". Know the lingo associated with the topic. Appear informed on the subject. Read the initial news story and the brief editorial to get a feel for the community that you are siding with.

Give praise. You are supporting a popular topic, and the more in agreement that you are with the populace the faster you will be positively moderated. There is no better way to win this approval than to acknowledge the topic's perceived strengths.

Lastly, find a way that the topic really, truly, is beneficial in some way. This insightful and positive observation of the topic on hand will "seal the deal".

The Unpopular Stance Karma Whore can be more challenging, but more rewarding if pulled off correctly:

Quote
Taking an unpopular stance on a subject or against an entity can be leveraged to draw both flames and karma.

When positioning contra-popularity, remember that you risk an immediate threat of negative moderation. That said, you are required to capture the reader's mind quickly: you need a very assertive opening that is grounded in reality, which will encourage the moderator to read on.

After successfully capturing attention you must now lay out an arguement which is sound. You must provide supporting arguements that can be argued both for and against on many different levels. Such a series of supporting arguements will lure both those in agreement and those who are at odds with your assertions. This is key, because an unpopular stance, no matter how wrong, has its supporters. These supporters will assist in insuring that your unpopular stance is not moderated too low, too quickly.

Focus on things that have just as much of a chance of occurring as they do of never happening at all. Be direct with your opinions, confident: remember that there is a choir that you are preaching to, and that choir does not wish to have an unsure and ignorant pastor. On the other side of the fence, your adversaries are better angered by a direct and forceful speaker, and are likely to smell a ruse should you be too vague and unsure. You aim to not only pool karma, but also to entice marks.

And on that note, good luck with the new karma system...  ;)

Massey: No, he needs to be left alone.  We can't fix any of this with violence.
Schlock: You're just afraid to use enough of it.

Tagon: So what is it, gas?  Ice crystals?
Ennesby:  It's a melange.

Then who's been smiting me, I wonder?  I assumed it was you, bird-brain.  (Btw, I have both smitten and applauded you.)
