A slightly odd question
« on: August 15, 2008, 09:26:51 AM »
Not sure if this is the right place for it; apologies if not. But I've always wondered, and I'm finally bored enough today to ask - what is the forum favicon a picture of?

It's a shoe.

Really? I can't see that at all :(

It still looks like a fox-headed alien's head to me!

I know! I looked like a plane to me before!

But the leg is on the left, then a shoe-point pointing upwards. Once you've seen it for what it is, you'll recognize it :P (I can now no longer see the plane I used to see).

The reason there is a lady's shoe as the symbol, by the way, is that the forum is hosted on skepchick. The icon is the "logo" for the skepchick site. I was trying to find a bigger picture so you could see it well, but to no avail.

I'm sure you were thinking of the pic that Ole posted here.

Looks like the gif was moved after the forum conversion though.  I can't find where it resides in the new version, looked through the source code and could not find it.  I R DUM.

It took me way too long to figure out what the hell you were talking about.  The really funny thing is that I have NEVER wondered what that icon was.  I think I am immune to commercial bling after going through a corporate rebranding and having 8 hours of motivational speakers telling me I had to become the icon.

Ah ha! I see it now, cheers :)

Bye bye, fox headed alien :(

Because favicon.ico comes from the document root of the domain skepchick.org, not the directory the the forum is in.

Ok lessee *rifles through notes*

Ah yes.. Ok.  Here's how it is:

First, the earth cooled...  No wait, wrong note.

Uh..

When a man and a woman really love each oth......no not that one either.

Oh yes, here it is:

favicon.ico is apache's (or IIS if you prefer the self-flagellation) recognized format for pictures that show up as icons in the address bar.  If there is not one in a subdirectory where a web page (be it php or html, etc. for example http://skepchick.org/skepticsguide/index.php) is located, it goes to the "document root" of that domain.  Since I don't have a favicon.ico in http://skepchick.org/skepticsguide it pulled the one from http://skepchick.org which is the shoe.

And that's how Galileo showed the earth revolves around the sun by observing the phases of Venus.

So does that mean you can add an icon?

Perhaps to this:

(That's Bob Novella's head.)

And if not would it be possible for you to add that to our smileys?

This is the smaller one:

They are property of IRON MAN, so I don't know if you'd need his permission.

That's a good one too. How did you find that?
