Rebecca banning Mattz
« on: September 04, 2008, 11:31:55 PM »
How come no one as yet come up in arms about what she did?

Just cover the name, and the cute poking out face.

Am pretty sure if anyone else did there would have already beena  bitch feast.

Just why not?

Beleth I am changing the subject line of these posts to reflect the accurate spelling of the banned member's name.  This will make it easier to search for this thread in the future.

I sent her a PM.  I thought it would be more appropriate.  In any case, the thing to keep at the forefront of any dialogue with Rebecca is civility.  She certainly has no obligations to listen to us.  Any members who send abusive PMs like they did to ducky would only make things worse.

Probably because I have no idea what your talking about, is there a thread where is might be explained?

Really the only thing I'm concerned with is that it seems as though it was a permaban, without warning.

I have a hard time getting upset over Rebbecca banning a newb who posted rape threats.

EDIT: From the "Forum rules" thread: "By registering for this forum, you agree not to post any abusive, obscene, libelous, hateful, threatening, sexually explicit, or illegal content that violates any applicable laws. Doing so may lead to your user account being immediately and permanently banned."

As I'm sure you know, many of those rules are not actually enforced.  See the Explicit Section.

Anyway, I didn't really like the guy either, but I still think he should have been given a chance to stop being immature, especially since we've had nun porn, dead baby jokes, Hellen Keller jokes, etc.  Even ExSpiritual was given more chances, and his remarks were much more malicious.  But it seems I may be in the minority here.  Feel free to let Rebecca know what you think.

I agree with Rebecca's decision in this case. None of Mattz's posts seemed to be much more than annoying BS, but this one was definitely over the line. Maybe he was encouraged by the liberal moderation policy and wanted to see what he could get away with-I guess he found out.

But what the difference of this and Schl death threat that got him banned?

I'm done with disputing forum moderation decisions, but I do think it's a little funny when people put a garbage can in the middle of the room and then get angry when people throw trash in it.

I thought that the people who protested the creation of an explicit section were completely overreacting, but I have to say it seems their predictions have actually come true, to my disappointment. Is it really worth having a place where people can post boobs or say fuck when it attracts all of this kind of stuff? I don't remember this kind of troll being a big problem before ... it was more 9/11 deniers and crazies, which were infinitely more fun than this.

Maybe it really is time to rethink the explicit section and go back to just a regular forum with the rules applied across the board. I've recently stopped going into the explicit section altogether and didn't even know Mattz existed until just now and it's greatly improved my experience of the forums. Just today I've read mostly about physics and the Canadian and US elections and played some mafia and it's the nicest day I've had on the forums for a while until now. Maybe I should stay out of the administration section too. :P

It does seem like we could maybe be a little more highbrow.

I mean, I could see some media-savvy true believers discovering these forums and using certain aspects of the Explicit section to really smear the skeptical movement--the racist jokes, the sex confessions, the porn, et cetera.

Not that I think we all have to act like the British upper class circa P.G. Wodehouse all the time, but still.  And I do agree with Rebecca that that Mattz guy was a clueless jackass.  Good riddance to him.

I appreciate you all having an opinion about how the forum should be run, since moderation is an important issue that affects the feeling of the board.

That said, what Mattz posted was beyond the pale. If I were a woman logging on to this forum for the first time and I saw a thread calling out specific female posters who should be raped, I would log off and never come back. That would be completely obvious to anyone posting such a thing, and clearly Mattz was trying to get a reaction. Not doing something about it goes against everything I'm striving for in terms of contributing to a welcoming community of skeptics. In a case like this, I have absolutely no interest in warnings and second chances.

Consider this an executive decision from the person who ultimately "owns" the board. I'll have no patience for someone posting rape threats on my forum. I'll not unban Mattz and if I see someone else writing similar posts I may just ban them as well. Consider this everyone's first warning.

I agree with kikyo, and will add that if you think that Mattz was clearly beyond the pale, then perhaps you should read some more of the conversations that take place inside the Explicit section.  A phrase that was popular a while ago was "surprise buttseks", and that was used by women as well as men.  It might help you make a decision about how to clarify the rules for the explicit section if you read this thread.  It was focused on the talk going on in IRC, but went on to more general moderation.  The responses by older members of the community are especially informative.
