2009 Dead Pool Game - WINNAR is Evil Eye!
« on: October 08, 2008, 02:34:44 PM »
The rules:
Each person guesses 25 people.
All guesses must obviously be guesses of living persons of notoriety.  When it comes to questionable notoriety status, the mods will discuss and determine if that person is acceptable.  A general rule is that the person must be of somewhat mentionable status, appear in the news often or is just plain well-known.  Unborn babies cannot be used but children of famous people can.  For example you could use any of Demi Moore's kids but not Rebecca Romijn's unborn child unless the child is born prior to 1/1/09.  It is best to supply as much info about that person as possible by typing this info after the name.  For example, a player may choose C.C. DeVille.  Others may not know who he is.  After doing some checking I would decide he is acceptable since he is the guitarist for Poison.  In this case the player should have posted C.C. Deville – Poison guitarist in his guessing post.  This just makes things easier, even if the person is obvious.  EXAMPLE:  Arnold Schwarzenegger – actor and governor of CA.

Once you post and guess there is no editing permitted.  The system notes at the bottom of your post if you edited.  All edited posts after guessing is complete will result in disqualification.

Scoring:
If a celeb is either over the age of 80 (80 and 1 day is over 80 - see birthday rule in green below) or is clearly in poor health prior to the guess, the points awarded will be 5.
Points awarded for age is age at time of death.  So if a person is 79 but turns 80 then dies, 5 points will be awarded.  If the person turns 80 the day of his/her death (dies on their birthday), 20 points will be awarded.
EXAMPLE: Paul Newman just passed – he was very ill and he was 83.
If you had Paul on your list (had this game been active in 2008) you would have gained 5 points.
All other scores are the celeb at age of death subtracted from 100.  This makes guesses of younger persons worth more points.
EXAMPLE: Heath Ledger passed at 28 and was not ill - suicide is not considered a factor in the dead pool game.  Had you had Heath in your list and the game were active in 2008, you would have gained 72 points (100-28=72)
If a person is NOT ill prior to the guess and becomes ill during the game, full points will be awarded.

To score, the celeb must be clearly deceased as noted by a viable source.
The source will be posted and each player notified of his points.
If you are aware of one of your celebs passing, please PM me or post immediately so I may verify and score.

Game start/end:
The game begins at 00:00:01 on January 1, 2009 and ends midnight December 31 at 23:59:59 at the International Date Line.
All guesses must be posted before begin time.

Winner/prize:
The winner is the person with the highest score at end time.  Ties will need to be considered at the time.  I will message the winner(s) as to the status and prize at game end.  The prize will be something like a $25 amazon gift card or similar (still undecided but it will be a real prize – just nothing incredible).  After some consideration have decided to make the prize an SGU T-Shirt in color of their choice unless the winner chooses otherwise.
The decision of the judge (me, StoneQuarry) is final and cannot be contested - I will simply ignore the attempts at score-challenges or baby-whining after the game ends.  I mean, it's just a damn game for T-Shirt people.   ::)

Additional notes:
Once a celeb dies, the poster may then select another person into his pool (always keeping 25 persons on the board).  Any celeb who has become sick during 2008 cannot be used as an additional pick.  This new pick must be in the form a new post - no editing the original.

Assassinating celebrities or conspiring to do so will result in immediate removal from the game.  ::)

Take your time and draw your list carefully.
Only one post with your 25 guesses is permitted prior to Jan 1.
The game does not officially start until Jan 1 so you have over 2 months to decide on your list.
If you create a list prior to Jan 1 and someone on your list dies before Jan 1, 2009, you will gain no points for them since the game doesn't begin until Jan 1.
Once the game begins you can add additional people, replacing those who have died prior to 2009, always keeping 25 on your list.
You cannot change your picks prior to Jan 1 because someone else came to mind or you forgot someone who was sick.  You can ONLY add people if someone dies prior to game start, again in the form of a new post explaining who died on your list.  Please check with me prior to new (added due to death) guess posts so I can make note.

I am the game mod and I may choose to play for fun but my points do not count towards the prize.
Got a problem with that, don't play!

It is going to be difficult for me to keep track of the current health of everyone's guesses.  I do not have time to research every celeb.  Please be honest and note if the person you selected is in poor health.  For example - Michael J Fox has Parkinson's, he may live through the year but if you choose him please make note of his current illness.

PLEASE check the rules periodically.
As questions and concerns arise prior to Jan 1 the rules may be altered.

additions above in green due to uncertainties of game play

So – wanna play?

Added Jan 2, 2009
WHAT?  I only have 11 entries?!?!?
I need more people to play this game.
I will extend signups until Jan 5, 2009.
Here is the deal.
Since these 11 people have abided by the rules and got their entries in prior to the deadline, anyone that dies on their list prior to Jan 5, these people earn double points.

Since Ape is no longer active I am the lone mod for this game so my word is final.
His account is still active so his entry counts.
I will try to judge everything as fairly as I can.
Since I am putting up a real prize for this game, I become god of it.  ;)

The entries:

Apeiron - 5 points for Ted Kennedy

Skulker - 5 points for Ted Kennedy

Johnny Fahrenheit

funda62

dcardani - 10 points for Bea Arthur & Ted Kennedy

Evil Eye - 60 points for Ed McMahon (5), Patrick Swayze (5) and MJackson (50)

Green Ideas - 10 points for Ted Kennedy & Claude Lévi-Strauss

Neutral Milk

wastrel - 5 points for Ted Kennedy

DaveKidneys - 5 points for Patrick Swayze

myra555

johnny red - 10 points for Farah Fawcett and Patrick Swayze

Zeno Izen

I haven't yet had a chance to review the names on the lists these people selected.  I will do that when I can and any entry that is questionable I will let the person know.  I will try to pay attention to deaths of famous people over the year and if I miss anyone please point it out even if you are not playing the game.  All help is appreciated.

MODIFIED RULES! (1/21/2009)
All players are welcome to add their lists at any time during 2009.
The rule for editing has not changed - all edited lists will be disqualified.
All people who submitted their lists prior to Jan 1, 2009 can guess 25 celebs.
All guessers after Jan1 will work this way:
Every 1st and 15th of the month one person will be removed from newer players' lists.
So if you were to play today (Jan 21) you could only select 23 guesses.
This makes it more on a level field for those who sent in their lists prior to 12/31/2008.
Jan 1 - Jan 14th - 24 guesses
Jan 15th - Jan 31st - 23 guesses
Feb 1 - Feb 14th - 22 guesses and so on.

You are only allowed 1 list.

Refusing to abide by any of the above rules is grounds for disqualification.

THE GAME IS NOW OPEN TO ALL SGUers!

Ted Kennedy is a bit of an easy choice isn't he?

I want to play but I want to wait until the last possible moment to post my list.   :)

Ted Kennedy is a bit of an easy choice isn't he?

Which is why he'll hardly earn me any points :P

I'm counting on Casey Serin, Amy Winehouse and Paris Hilton to bring in the big bucks!

My List
(Just for fun, unless StoneQuarry decides to moderate this on his own and I can play as normal)

I don't mind - just didn't know if I could keep track on my own.
I can certainly give it my best effort.
In reality the game will probably move quite slowly.
Funny - Randi was going to be on my list as well.
I like your explanation of who Paris Hilton is.   :D

I'd like to play but I'm pretty intimidated by Aperion's thorough, well documented list   :D so I'll wait till later when my horoscope is in a better phase.

What if you post your list now  and one them dies before the end of the year.  Do you get to put in a substitute?

What if you post your list now  and one them dies before the end of the year.  Do you get to put in a substitute?

From the rules:
Take your time and draw your list carefully.
Only one post with your 25 guesses is permitted prior to Jan 1.
The game does not officially start until Jan 1 so you have over 2 months to decide on your list.

If they were to die before the end of the year that would be your fault for posting too early and you would lose them until Jan 1.
After Jan 1 you could substitute them, the game would officially start then and you would only have 24 people on your list.
So you really wouldn't lose anything.
This has now been added to the rules as well.
But really, what are the odds?   ;)

PS - I take it today is a good astrology day for you

You could just replace them immediately on January 1 then, no problem.

P.S.: There are several people in bad health on my list, I haven't put that in the info. I'll just notify you (SQ) when they die :)

P.P.S.: Am I in the game officially or not?

Sure Ape - you can play

ETA: I noticed:
Mike J Fox, Castro, Randi was recently in the hospital and Kennedy is in bad shape (I believe).
Don't know about the others.

Would the 105 year old virgin still give me 5 points? She isn't ill.  ;)

5 points - she is over 80 (but not a celeb so she can't be used anyway)
