New site - Wow.
« on: January 31, 2009, 02:41:29 PM »
The new site design just loaded for me (I thought it was gonna be a couple more weeks?). And it looks fantastic. I actually swore out loud, and no one was around to hear me! Well, technically my boyfriend is in the apartment but he's asleep.

I just wanted to point one thing out: Perhaps a text line reading something like 'Click below to cycle through the SGU podcasts' might be prudent for newcomers to the site. The only reasons I suggest this is because on many sites I visit the 'podcast' is supplementary to the main page, and given how expansive the array of media you guys have now (The SGU blog, the forums, links to Neurologica) it might be cool for newcomers to see something prominent indicating that the podcast is the sort of hub of this particular website.

I only mention this because I was actually confused for a few seconds as to how to navigate. But I was also being blown away at the same time. Is there a term for that? Like when you're playing a video and are being impressed by how amazing the graphics are and forget that - oh yeah, I have to navigate the ship/kill the monster.

Bet the Germans have a word for it. But they can make compound words that last decades.

OK when i go to http://www.theskepticsguide.org I get some new site lements but it's like the stuling doesnt load. (I did clear my cache) and then when I click on  HOME on the flash it takes me to http://1638916.sites.myregisteredsite.com/ and then the site displays properly.

Also is it possible to direct me to where I download the podcast mp3 please?

Thanks.

The show wouldn't download for me (using FF 3.05). I also tried using IE Tab, but it still didn't work.
Both ways I did get the "save as" window, but after that nothing happened.

Thanks Hadez, it was being a bit awkward for me too. I also didn't realize that the site was quite as new as I thought, so I guess we should expect a few hiccups while it gets up to speed. I just don't want anyone to think I'm bitching about the site design two seconds after they got it up.

Beautiful re-design.

Still has the apostrophe in the wrong place, though.

Firefox doesn't parse the RSS. I guess the MIME type is wrong. Should be "application/xhtml+xml", not "text/rss".

FeedValidator also throws out many errors: http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2F1638916.sites.myregisteredsite.com%2Ffeed%2Frss.aspx%3Ffeed%3Dsgu

Also, there no longer seems to be a way to download the podcast directly from the site.
Warning: I have a brain, and I know how to use it.

I can't find a link to the RSS podcast feed on the website. Clicking on the link in the flash applet doesn't seem to bring up a URL on my system - firefox 3.0.5, flash 10.0, gnu/linux.

Please, make some _simple_ version. The flash is killing me  >:(
And the links doesn't work, for example the "Download mp3" link. So, I currently cannot download any of the shows.
I'm using Firefox 2 and 3.

It would be great to have some really simple blog-style text-only version which has the download links, so we who are more interested in quickly finding the podcast can do that  ;)
(example on how simple something can be while still working perfectly: http://www.thefutureandyou.libsyn.com/)

Since you are already using libsyn, I suppose there is a link to something that looks like the above site, but for The Skeptics Guide?

Looks great. For those having problems do you always manully download each podcast from the site? If you don't want to use Itunes there are other options like Juice or rhythm box.

Yes, I do. The pros are that I don't need to start new software every time I want to check something new, it's completely cross-platform to do it via a web browser, and I still use RSS in my browser so I can quickly find new episodes.

While programs such as Juice (iTuns and Rhytmbox? uhoh, the only bloated thing I want on my computer is Windows!) might give me text sometimes, by going directly to the home page I also get all the text and pictures that might come with the podcast.

Hey all, site looks great! Excellent improvement!

The search feature is AWESOME, as I can search UFOs and it searches all the show notes and brings up all the episodes in which you talked about UFOs. Cool!

Quick point, and I'm not sure if this is the result of the browser I'm using (Safari), but there's a lot of empty space on the home page. Is this just an issue with the way it's rendering in this particular browser? Here's a screenshot.

Great job on the web re-design!  You did all that and without the help of the government!  I would still put in for some stiumlus money though!  Congrats NESS!
