Tiger Moth.

There's still quite a few around. Often used for towing up gliders.

I have to go with the Spitfire.

You're all wrong about this whole thing.  Take it from someone who flies for a living.

You don't even HAVE the best looking plane of all time listed.

The Beechcraft Staggerwing.  Incredible plane, especially for it's time.

Bump. That was my first thought. I do like the Cessna 195 and fortunately there's one at our local (rural) airport.

I picked the P38. Awsome plane very sleek. I didn't see the P40 on the list. Also  one of my favorites

They brought a Blackbird to the air museum near where I work. Got to get up close and personel with it.  ;D Nice piece of work there.

I grew near Beale AFB, where they were stationed for most of their lifetime.  Never got tired of seeing them or the C5 galaxy.

The C5 is a hell of a plane. Have you ever been in one? They are gigantic!

I was on one once. I could not believe how much equipment they put on her. 3 UH-1H helicopters, 2 trucks with trailers and a construction grader. Probably more but it was a long time ago. I thought they were going to need another C5A.

SR-71 Blackbird is the most beautiful aeroplane ever made?  WTF ???

That would be like saying a DeLorean DMC-12 is the most beautiful car ever made.

They are cool for what they are. But they are both butt ugly pieces of machinery.  ;)

I voted for the DC-3. Mainly for nostalgia reasons. I like the look and enjoyed the several trips I had on one.  8)

How can the Cessna 310 not be on the list?  I am totally offended.

Same here. I always dug the shark mouths painted on them.

Other favorites:
F-16
F-4

As a kid building model airplanes I always thought those three planes were the most distinctive looking.

Where I grew up on Long Island, the F-14 Tomcat was definitely the most popular, judging from the "Anytime, Baby" stickers that sons of Grumman workers would have on their books, etc.

I originally liked the RS-71, but the arm-twisting won and I moved over to the SR-71.

P-51D's have clean lines, the DC-3 is a magnificent beast, the B-17 will always be the Queen but I fell in love with the Cessna 310R the first time I flew one.

That's the beauty of airplanes, a large range of types to appreciate for various reasons. The odd duck Douglas Mixmaster -- I lament that I will never see one, hear one, or touch one. Let alone fly in one.

Watched a Citation 560XL not more than 300 feet from the parallel county highway takeoff just an hour ago today -- I never get tired of seeing a powerful machine from close-up perform something indistinguishable from magic.

I have no idea what most of the planes in the survey look like. In my opinion this Fokker - independent of its relationship to Snoopy or Allies or actual fucking evil mofos - is just pretty.

Note that the logo and such are blights painted on the skin of an aircraft that has a pleasing shape. For (a CIS) example:

Something about the twin booms of the P-38
