Decreasing Forum Traffic
« on: July 14, 2009, 01:57:52 am »
Here are four graphs depicting forum activity from August '08 through June '09.
(BTW, Pages Views is supposed to say that it is *1000).

What do you think is going on?   It is possible the data is inaccurate, but I'll assume it is good.

It would be interesting to see this data broken down by areas of the forum. One thing I suspect might be happening is that there are fewer mafia games since several players started playing on a different forum around November.  That would affect page views and new posts.

For new topics and new members...maybe since the forum hasn't been promoted on the podcast in a while that has cut back on new people, which also brings down new topics?

Maybe we're all a bunch of assholes?

 :-\   ???

Well I know I'm an asshole, but I wouldn't want to speak for everyone else.

People stopped caring about Ben Stein's movie.

Well, people pretty much know how everyone is going to respond to everything, and there are only a few topics that people talk about, really. Someone will post the obligatory outrage (like I'm about to do), and we all log on and make our stock statements, and then there's really nothing else to say. I find myself doing more socializing than serious work here these days, and it's a ton of fun, but it doesn't take as many posts. Plus it's summertime, and the TV forum is slow (although that's seasonal and probably not reflected in the general trend).

Well it looks like a crash from January to March.

Perhaps a bunch of people got laid off and are no longer posting from work.
Also without new people we won't the new threads on topics we covered before.  Maybe facebook and twitter and some loss over to ILS or JREF forums.

Maybe ILS is stealing members.

It is all my fault.  I moved in early February and wasn't wanting to post my sob stories for several months.  I'm back now though so the numbers should pick up again.   :-*

Seriously though, I'm sure ILS has something to do with it as the split happened back in November and several of the people who went over were big posters in the book and game forum.

During December-January, I was kinda busy and left. And when I came back, some big deal had happened and a bunch of people left. Does this have anything to do with that incident?

Maybe more competition from elsewhere on the web.

Boredom, repetition, defections, and in summer (northern hemisphere), we tend to go outside more and not spend as much time on the computer.

My hypothesis.

Well it looks like a crash from January to March.
I for one shorted forum stats with CDS and derivatives having seen the forum economy crash coming ::). Now I'm filthy rich and about to retire from the internet. Where can I cash in my internet points for real clams?

Don't blame me, i've been doing my best to keep the numbers up! I've been more active for the last months than the rest of the year i've been a member.

DoctorOHM was actually the person I was going to blame all of this on. Hmmm.. now I'll have to find a new culprit.  :P
