Rap today is where popular metal was in 1988.  A mockery of itself.  MC Lars made some good points:

So who will be Rap's Nirvana?

If I had to guess, I'd say it's Kanye.

No that would be Raps Warrant.

I mean what will come along to kill Rap like Nirvana did late 80's Metal.

Ahh, gotcha.  Misinterpretation.  I went with Kanye because he took hip-hop to great new heights of insipid whininess.  :)

Well there are some acts that transcend the times.  Some Metal Bands are bigger now than they were in the 80's: Iron Maiden probably being the biggest.  I am sure the same will happen with the good Rappers.

the mainstream of any genre sucks.. period.  end of story.

rap music is no different.  put the effort in and get into the underground and you'll be kicking yourself for being a close minded git.  there's a rapper out there for you somewhere, dollars to donuts.. whether you find that artist is up to you or not.

I'm such a nerd though.

For my money (which is none), I'll take MC Frontalot over anyone on the "real" rap scene.

Woah Real Instruments in Rap?  Inconceivable!

There's no incompatibility between instruments and rapping.  I don't think it would be possible to live through the 1990s without hearing a fair bit of it. Something by the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Rage Against the Machine at the very least.

Now real instruments in hip hop, that is a bit more odd.  But hip hop has pretty close ties to a few different subgenres of electronica, so that seems like kind of a duh.
