I think we need to close out threads that will not die. That way the people who want to carry on interminably can start a "part II" thread, and those who got caught up in the nightmare by one I'll conceived post can stay the hell away!

Good example is the word association thread that will not die. :deadhorse:

I second this motion. How about an unofficial rule that if a thread reaches a certain point (say 50 pages) it's closed a new one started to allow any one who wants to drop out. I say 50 because around there, it's new people who have joined in and arguments are beginning to repeat themselves.

I think we discussed this before and decided against it for some reason.  Perhaps we will revisit it again.

I think we decided against it because there was no technical need to do it.  In other words, the DB and the forum software can handle massive threads just fine.

As you have probably realized by now, I don't like fixing things that ain't broke. :)  I prefer being hands-off as much as possible.  Usually the members here are pretty good at policing themselves.  I understand the annoyance at getting notified when a thread you watched a long time ago gets raised from the dead, but you can always un-notify yourself from that thread.

Splitting threads won't keep a discussion from showing up on the "Show New Posts" page either.

OK this is going to make me sounds stupid, but how do you do that?

Click on "NOTIFY" a second time.  It's a toggle.

I'm not talking about email notifications. Turned those off ages ago. I'm talking about the thread always appearing in 'Show New Replies to Your Posts.'

Users could do this themselves.  By agreement, new Word Association and Son Of Word Association threads could be started (for instance) , and then a final post could be put in the others kindly directing people to the new thread.

(And then we'll argue over who gets the last post.)   ::)

If you're going to allow voting, it should be for or against.

One way to keep it from becoming a battle would be to give people a limited number of votes, say, 3 per day.

If you toggle it on, then off again, it won't show up after a new reply.  Thanks Beleth.

I just tried this, and it works!  So you can remove a topic.

That won't work, seeing as how you can change how many posts are shown per page.
