My knowledge of this "Moonie" issue is limited to the friends who've worked at the Washington Times over the years. None of them were ever been approached, let alone recruited, by the Unification Church. In fact all are fairly left-of-center politically (and would surely have rebuffed any such efforts); for journalists that isn't supposed to matter, and for the most part it doesn't. I'm just saying that at the newsroom level the main difference between the Times and the Post, where several later got jobs, was the paycheck. Editorials are another matter, obviously, but the Moonies would argue that they're only leveling the playing field.

The church's financial empire appears to be mostly fiction too. If the Times is any indication, Rev. Moon is in trouble. The paper recently sacked its entire metro and sports departments in a major cost-cutting move, refocusing its coverage exclusively to national and political coverage. It was probably inevitable in the current economic climate -- the Post is hemorrhaging money too -- but the Times has never made a profit.

Objectivity is sacrificed in the service of higher goals.
