Careful, there is always a higher standard for the squeal.  The masses may turn on you without just enough new shiny bell's and whistles.  Where are my bells and whistles!

I am so tired of documentaries on astronomy using the Atomic Bomb as a measuring device for cosmic events - okay, a solar flare can be the equivalent of 1,000,000 atomic bombs... so what?

1.) I've never seen an atomic detonation in person, and have little frame of reference.
2.) Once you get to a million anything, I will again have no frame of reference.
3.) It's trite and cliche at this point.
4.) Atomic?  Really?  We haven't even moved on to nuclear weapons yet?

New word: skeptorcism

The expulsion or attempted expulsion of one's skepticism.

ETA: Just googled it. It's already a "word". Damn!

Yeah! Let's shift to hamster wheels! "The energy released by this solar flare is the same energy produced by a hamster running in a wheel for 18 trillion quadrillion years."

Oh, yeah. That's much better. ::)

I used 100 watt light bulbs. The suns energy production in ergs per second is equvalent to 4 trillion trillion light bulbs. That is much easier to picture than nuclear weapons, which actually let me illustrate by explaining kilotons and megatons that we are just going to fail at getting a feeling for these amounts of energy. They are unimaginably.

First of all, I think you mean power production. Second of all, why not just say 400 trillion trillion watts if you're using a 100 watt element as a reference?
