The Walking Dead (Comics)

Here is a place to discuss the comic books that the AMC series is based on, in order to keep spoilers from the books out of the TV show thread.

But... but... but... there's nothing in this thread! How am I supposed to find answers to my obscure questions without expending effort here?

You could wait until it's personally revealed to you  :)

It's been personally revealed to me. It just sounds stupid, which is why I wanted more information about it before judging it the rest of the way.

I've looked around and it doesn't seem like they've given a reason--not yet at least.  You may just have to wait or accept not knowing.
Personally, i blame the french.

I just don't think that dead people suddenly coming alive would take over society. I don't care why they suddenly come alive... there just aren't that many dead people with functioning nervous systems above ground to overrun everyone else at the outset, and it seems like it would be pretty easy to keep a lid on once everyone else figured out what was happening.

So what am I missing?

I had missed that, yes, but my understanding of The Walking Dead comics version was that zombies were not infectious. Anyone who is dead comes back to life. You don't catch Zombie from zombies, although a zombie's bite will kill you from serious infection. Models based on disease outbreaks don't seem like they would apply.

It doesn't take that much time to lock up a dead body or contain a dying one. And there aren't that many corpses lying around undetected in parks and forests.

Have you ever seen a zombie film where someone's wife/daughter/husband/whatever gets bitten and they do the sensible thing and instantly smash their brains out to death with a claw hammer?
It's silly but you can't argue that it's usually the best course of action for an interesting narrative.  If people just did the sensible thing all the time there would be very few good horror stories out there.   :p
And for all intents and purposes they can be considered infectious, if you get bit you become a zombie, the mechanics of why don't really matter in the film world.

Yep. That's what I was looking for. Thank you. I can stop fretting about it now.

It's not just everyone who's already died, it's everyone who dies after the apocalypse begins. Imagine you're an EMT or a cop when that goes down; I think civilization failing in a few weeks makes sense.
