Need inspiration...
« on: January 02, 2011, 04:12:28 AM »
Ughh so I'm trying to write some music and have some great guitar stuff down, but can't seem to find a good muse.. I'm honestly sick of writing lovey songs or heartbreak songs about girls, that shit gets old... Anyone have any ideas of a cool thing to write a song about? I can make the guitar music match any topic...

You could always write about movies or books. The band Elora Danan once wrote an entire album about Lost. There's a myriad of emotions and thoughts laid out for you to examine or comment on. Give it a crack and post what you come up with!

Has to be the worst thing ever  ::)

Much of my favorite music is almost nonsensical lyrically, so I cant help with out turning you insane.

was every song a big set up that mislead the listener and had no pay-off because she was just milking as much time as possible so that a single could be classified as an LP? that would be very Losty

You can never go wrong with good ol' Cthulhu...

failing that, how about the filmography of James O. Incandenza?

Some ideas:

Your favorite foods
How old Larry King is
Saturn
Ramadan
Casinos
Your Childhood Home
The worst Christmas, etc. gift(s) you've ever gotten
Everything that is more likely than the Cubs winning the world series
Disco
The "I'm on a horse" old spice guy
Monopoly

Have you considered writing music about mythology? There's a lot of it out there.

When we do grindcore-type stuff, it's always something irreverent and comically over-the-top offensive. We frequently sit around drinking beer and coming up with offensive titles for songs then writing lyrics for anything that sounds particularly funny.

I'll grab anything that interests me or evokes an emotion that I think might make a good song and try to write something. For metal stuff, I've got three unrecorded right now. One about the Jonestown Massacre written as a retrospective by someone who put full trust in Jim Jones until they realize they were betrayed, and a pair with the first about cold war paranoia building to the logical conclusion of a doomsday machine with a short interlude that builds into an abstract portrayal of the imagery in Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains."

More often than not, stuff that I write to see how it works out sucks and I delete it, but I get a few good ones. You say you don't want to write lovey dovey songs, so go out and do something that gets you in a mood other than lovey-dovey, channel surf or keep clicking Wikipedia's random page until something gets your attention, and see what you can make of it.

Also, you should write an epic ballad (10+ minutes) about a friend's pet, show up at their house unannounced and ask if you can see the pet, and perform it live.

1. Go get drunk, really, really drunk!
2. Wake up the next day feeling like crap.
3. Try to remember the night before.
4. Grab your guitar.

Worked for me in my early 20's
A bit different now that I have a spouse and child in the house.
Still get hangovers, but I can't just play guitar whenever I want.

I would like to hear this. I trust you'll release it to the general public in some way once it is recorded?

I know this is cliché - but I find the best cure for writer's block is writing.

I sometimes use writing exercises.  I just limit myself to writing for a certain amount of time - 5 or 10 minutes is what I normally do.  Even stream-of-consiousness writing can inspire me to think of things I wouldn't have normally.

Also, I believe I come up with my best creative ideas just after I wake up - so maybe just trying to write at different times might get you on a new path creatively?

Yes, but don't hold your breath, we're kind of bad with procrastination and we still don't have a drummer.

Oh I hear ya!
My band hasn't had more than two members in the same room for over two years...
Sure we chat about getting down to the rehearsal rooms, but it never happens.
Also, as much as I like these guys, they like doing some pretty serious drugs and get into woo heavily.
Poor kids and their credulity/addictions.

The couple times I brought up making a record that was based on a science theme, I got shot down.
