Need some U.S. History podcast recommendations...
« on: October 19, 2011, 11:47:16 PM »
Can anyone recommend a good U.S. History podcast? I'm looking for something sort of like the BBC History Magazine podcast, only for the U.S. It doesn't have to be 1 hour long episodes per se, but something that tells sort of lesser known stories.

Thanks for your help in advance!

There was a great series of lectures on revolutionary era US from some top caliber school I found on iTunes and listened to. I'll see if I can find it again.

Studio 360's American Icons series is pretty swell.  Some of it leans more toward pop culture, but there are historical goodies too.

I'm pretty damn far from an expert on U.S. history, but doesn't it go something like this..

"We beat the English in our own backyard, then we smacked up ourselves, then we smashed up the Germans a couple of times off shore.. then we liberated rock n roll and cannabis.

Fin."

U.S. history 101. Where do I apply for my ph.D?

Funny thing is that since this was posted Mike Duncan moved on to his podcast "Revolutions".

The second series is an excellent take on the American Revolution

Anyway, some other podcasts I know of about American History.....

History according to Bob is a hodge podge of topics, many of them covering American History.

The Civil War podcast by Rich & Tracy. I can't personally recommend this as I haven't really gotten into it, but it's notable in that it's a long running podcast about the Civil War.

History of World War II - This podcast is over 100 episodes and still not to 1942 and America's entrance into the war. So I will allow you to decide if it's enough about America. Either way, it's an excellent podcast.

Hardcore History also has some good podcasts on American history. Right now one of the free episodes is The American Peril, which is a nice in depth look about the Spanish American War in particular, and America's emergence on the world stage from a regional to a global power in general.
