Does it have any scientific credibility?

As a heuristic, depending on your goals, it can be useful.

Eat whole*, natural* foods with the exception of whey protein powder is the general gist.

Did you really need to buy the book and buy into the whole pseudoscience philosophy for that?

No.

* Don't bother asking me to define whole or natural, you can make that distinction for your self.

I think cavemen were skinny because they had to kill Mammoths with spears. If you manage to do that you will be skinny.

The problem is not whether it works or not. Like most similar diets, it works. The problem is when they say why it works and why it's the "best" diet.

My barber was taking to me a couple of months ago about him feeling great about the Paleo diet. I say, "I know about it, not interested in it." I know how hard it is to follow, especially in my country. On my last visit, I see him, a little chubbier. I ask of the diet, and he said it was hard to follow and he was busy, so he hasn't been following it much.

That was the conclusion of the SGU when they talked about diets as well. Just pick any diet you can follow, they all work. And most people are not trying to become optimally healthy, we just want to loose a stone, lower are blood pressure, and look a bit better. The Paleo, like all diets, probably works but is mostly a fad.

Eh, Ive lost 112 lbs over the last year and a half just using calories-in calories-out "follow the food guide" method.

But im wondering what I should do for optimal health/building muscle when I hit my goal and want to maintain my weight.
And "diet studies" are among the most popular studies done, so many options, so much to read, it leaves my head spinning.

I think goals are what is important. So you want to be optimal once you hit a target weight? Optimal can mean lots of things.  Someone who body builds and someone who does triathlons have different optimal body types and fitness goals.

"Paleo/Primal" isn't just a diet.

Art de Vany., just a 74 year old retired economics professor.  He's the guy to blame for the paleo diet.  It sprung from his idea to manage his son's type I diabetes.
