Sci-Fi fans: Check out Wool by Hugh Howey
« on: July 13, 2012, 03:12:49 AM »
Note: x-posted to JREF. Also, I have no idea how to post links with text on this board. So they're below.

Howey is in independent author who's following the new-ish model of releasing novella sized smaller works for less money. Wool was released as 5 separate stories. The Wool Omnibus is now available and costs only $6. I'm a notoriously slow reader, but devoured this book (as well as the prequel) in a matter of days.

Being an indie author he thrives on word-of-mouth. So that's what I'm doing.

I wholeheartily agree. Great book and especially the first couple of chapters you are really wondering where it is going to.
Great storytelling and writingstyle.

I am doomed not to get any paid work done today. Started Wool last night, only stopped reading because the iPad is out of juice. What a great read!!!

Just bought it. For 99 cents, this better be good.  ;D

This is good stuff.  Thanks for the recommendation.  Not only is it sci-fi, it is also very skeptical as it surrounds how perception shapes how people view reality.  And the nasty consequences when they turn out to be wrong.

Great book, but why do the characters even turn on each other in Silo 18? Some of their mythology is shattered, is that really enough to go ape-shit?

If mythology is all you have, then yes I'd think it'd be enough.

I just bought First Shift (book 6 of the Wool series) which is a prequel to books 1-5 and supposed to set the stage, maybe then the psychology of such events will make more sense. I did love books 1-5, really interesting reading, will make a great movie too some day I think.
