The situation now is what should have happened in the first place. I did not think that the thread required locking in the first place.

Would your opinion have been difference if he had posted on a different topic?  What if he had said something like 'F*&k Abortion clinics' and started posting dead baby pictures?
The analogy is not the same really. Mostly because I don't think that thread would last in the Explicit section.

I get you though. Andrew could have done it differently. I just felt it was a bit harsh. Still, I am biased, as I am fond of Andrew.

This issue could have been sidestepped with a policy about low-content OPs in politics.

/sigh

I really think this is a lack of basic manners problem and of just one singular person.  I've been on this forum for a number of years now and have seen a great number of people come and go, but there's been only one person who would start a thread for no other reason than to spew links over and over specifically to support an unstated and probably controversial position.

The convenience of this tactic is that there's nothing to defend, since there's no thesis.  Essentially this is baiting for an argument without putting one forth yourself, and I've only see one person do it in all my years on this forum.

Is one person deleting their account worthy of this much gnashing of teeth?

Perhaps. However, that's not the scenario. There've been several others lately.

Yes, you're right. There was another recently, now that you mention it. I'd forgotten. But, frankly, if any person feels the need to publicly throw a tantrum and request a deletion of their account in an effort to show how unfair or evil they think the forum is, then I say honor their request. I don't favor creating a policy that accommodates this type of personality. I would say that we want to do what's possible to keep people who can discuss things rationally. Coddling childish outbursts doesn't seem to jive with that goal.

Meh. Some people have a lower threshold for getting upset; I don't accept that that means they have nothing to offer.

For what it's worth, I can think of several people I've known on other forums who were extremely knowledgeable and interesting, but who also had quite short tempers on occasion.

And I'm not endorsing tolerating constant emotional tantrums that result in account deletion requests from the same person, either!  :)

Oh, I'm not saying they have nothing to offer, or that they aren't interesting. I'm just saying if you're try to mold a community through policy, then building policy to accommodate those persons is probably not the best course of action.

We've lost a few reasonably prominent ones lately......

We have?  who?    when/where did this happen?

(needless to say, i'm apparently out of this loop)

A week or so ago Beleth did one of those one-post threads that said Johnny Slick's account has been deleted.

I liked Johnny Slick because he always did that thing where he called people "Lib" as if it was an insult even though he agreed with them.
