I just finished season 2 of Dark (from Netflix). This is one of my favorite series. I think it amazing in many ways.  I don't know how popular or well-known this series is but it has three things working against it: (1) it is pretty bleak. There is not much humor. (2) None of the main(?) characters is totally likable or is totally honorable. (3) it is complicated. You might need a pencil and a notebook to keep track of what is going on. For me, these are all positives.
Also,  if I were to say anything detailed about the plot I think it would be a spoiler. It is a show where I believe the less you know about it the more enjoyable it will be. If you haven't seen it, don't read about it, just watch the first 2 or 3 episodes (I strongly recommend the German language version with subtitles instead of the dubbed version). If you're not hooked by then just scrap it.
I understand that there will be one more, final season to wrap the story up.

I didn't make it past the beginning of S02E01 the first time I started watching, and then never came back to it. I gather it's worth getting into again?

I wasn't that impressed with the short season 3. I'll watch season 4 if there is one.

I agree with you in general but I dont think that is what happened here. I think the series as a whole worked really well and we did see big development in a number of characters.

I agree.

The season was good, but I think they went overboard on the clever kid thing, especially Lucas' sister. Super sassy and all too smart.

What I really liked about the series early on (season 1) is they hit the right mark on the kids.
It was as if a "real" world and real kids was beset with the type of weirdness of an 80's movie, but without the super-smart sassy Spielberg kids.

Also they over did the dorky uniform for the ice cream shop. There were occasional dumb uniforms, but none any bit close to that stupid.
The boy's shorts, however, were perfect.
There's no such thing as denial.

And Stranger Things season 4 takes places in a post-WWIII nuclear wasteland, right? Cuz how is the USSR building a military base and having armed soldiers on American soil NOT an act of war?

The thing I find most breaks my suspension of disbelief is that they're all running around in uniforms speaking Russian.  WTF, who would think that was a great plan?  Lets build a big military research facility in enemy territory and send over a bunch goons that don't speak english?  I sort of get for the scientist, maybe they have special skills that aren't readily available but certainly, they'd have enough soldiers that speak English to make it less noticeable.  Also, there point guy with the mayor?
