What!? What is a guy named "Idaho" doing in the Dune universe?
*Looks it up
Ohhh, I never knew it was us way in the future! The name Idaho must be the only part of earth culture that survived!

:-\

Dune is chock full of old Earth stuff. What do you think the name Atreides means? They trace their ancestry all the way to Atreus. Yes, that Atreus, father of Agamemnon, of Greek mythology.

Yeah, that's cool and all.
Tracing your ancestry to ancient Greece is cool. Sprinkling names in your sci-fi derived from ancient mythology is cool. Still puzzled why the name of a state known primarily for potatoes and racism gets in...

Well a significant theme in Dune is how history gets more and more incomplete and distorted the further away in time you are from it; hence the genealogy of the Atreides, which is obviously false to us but not to the characters in the books, because they're missing huge chunks of history that have been lost to the mists of time. When they talk about nuclear weapons, they mention that they were first used in a small-scale conflict by House Washington. They just don't get how large that war was, or rather how small humanity was; to them a conflict confined to a single planet is a minor skirmish. Neither do they understand how the political system worked at the time. They have hardly any information about those events. To them it's half-mythology, like King Arthur is to us.

The name Idaho is just a name to them. They don't know where it came from, they just use it because it's their family name. Maybe someone way back in their family tree came from the state of Idaho, who knows. They don't. There's plenty of such family names of uncertain etymologies and origins in today's languages as well.

Yeah Earth is regarded as mythical to many in Dune. Of course Pual and Leto know the truth, but it's not a well know fact.
Dune is the best :)

Also thanks everyone for the support so far. We are doing pretty darn well, we did 1k in the first day!

I am also working on a webcomic companion to the main book. It will take place before the events of ATGR proper. It's titled After the Gold Rush : Satellite, and follows Scout back on Titan as a kid biologist.
