Is it? It's an iPhone with the latest updates. I have other applications that have that option, Ingress is one of them, StarChart is another.
Have they opened an API for the GPS chip to the applications or is the GPS always on but just not reporting?

It all falls under "location services" which is on. and then you can choose which apps get to use that service. On many you have "always", when I'm using the app" and "never".

OK so the service is always on. Is the default "never" ?

Its Apple, so of course not. It's always.

I take that back, when you first open the app, you'll get a pop up that says, "this app needs access to location services, is that ok?"

then it's set to always, you have to go to settings and change it to "when I use it"

It's true. In the iOS Settings, under Privacy - Location Services, there are apps (such as Google Maps) that are set to allow location services "While Using", whereas Waze has only the "Always" and "Never" options - no option for "While Using".

Waze is our go-to iPhone navigation app.

It's kept us out of many traffic jams - we've learned to just trust it when it tells us to do something weird.

Late one night, tired and towing our travel trailer, Waze alerted us to an object in the road. I began slowing and paying attention and sure enough there was a huge piece of tire tread right in our lane. Not 100% sure we would have hit it otherwise, but the head's up was much appreciated.

We're believers.

From what I've heard Waze will work without GPS but it obviously won't be as accurate for your position but you should still get the crowd sourced warnings.

Is the iOS version different?

I just downloaded it, and used it,  and although it's very well put together,  it's ads make it nearly unusable.

Every few mins,  an ad for Tim Hortons, or a hotel etc pops up at the center of the screen,  taking up most of the screen. There is no obvious way to make it go away,  and the buttons that are avalible just change my destination to the thing it's advertising.

I can't even think of a feature that could be more annoying than that.

Ads don't come up all that often for us (iPhone version), and IIRC clicking anywhere outside the ad box closes it.

I think.

On mine, ads only appear when I am stopped at a traffic light, and go away when I move off.

Come to think of it, that's the only time we see them as well.

Since we mainly use it on trips, its not that big of a deal.

If you're in stop and go traffic then it could be annoying.

Waze helps you to avoid that sort of thing.

Not if you're in a city with lots of traffic lights.
