Anyone done the Windows 10 Upgrade yet?
« on: September 22, 2015, 12:59:36 PM »
Anyone done the Windows 10 Upgrade yet? I haven't heard too much about it, which I guess means that there aren't any big issues. Anyone have any personal experiences to share before I take the plunge?

I did it on my laptop that I don't use for anything important -  no issues at all, other than learning new ways to do everything and arrange stuff.

Planning on doing the PC this weekend.

For some reason, the Windows 10 updater does not like my high-end Samsung Ultrabook running Windows 7, despite me going through every help site. I can't get the icon to show up. I think I found a way to force an upgrade, but I am hearing bad things from other Samsung Ultrabook users.

I am waiting for a break in my contracted work in order to take the plunge.

you can download it to USB using the media creation tool and then use the USB to do your update

This is what I finally did, but it is giving me some nasty warnings in the first few steps, so I need to do a complete backup and prepare for a couple days of messiness before jumping in. There seem to be some proprietary wifi and other drivers in Samsung Ultrabooks that are causing problems, from what I am reading.

Got a new HP Pavilion touch screen laptop that came with Win8, and a free upgrade to 10.

I like 10 alright, but it did cause a couple of BSODs with the synaptic touchpad driver. There are some decently easy fixes for it (seems to be pretty common), but it was pretty frustrating to see the BSOD so soon after buying the laptop.

I've been hearing some rumors about some privacy issues with Windows 10:

Windows 10 can disable pirated games and illegal hardware

'Free' Windows 10 Makes Expensive Software Changes

Windows 10 upgrades from pirated predecessors won't be legit
The headlines don't say much about privacy, can you elaborate enough to entice me to read the articles?  I don't think Microsoft ever claimed that upgrading to Win 10 would legitimize previous stolen versions.  At least I was aware that they wouldn't at least by June.

So far I'm happy with 10 its seems faster and is definitely more user friendly than Win 8.

The first two claim that MS has the right to scan and disable illegal software that it finds on your machine.

That's from the EULA language for their online services, not Windows - no big surprise they reserve the right not to allow you to store illegal software in their cloud - and there's no evidence that they're doing any such thing in any case.
A novice was trying to fix a broken Lisp machine by turning the power off and on.
Knight, seeing what the student was doing, spoke sternly: “You cannot fix a machine by just power-cycling it with no understanding of what is going wrong.”
Knight turned the machine off and on.
The machine worked.

Why was a new thread started?

I upgraded, and I really like it so far.  Although it stored a lot of shit on my harddrive to do the update, that is now deleted.  It allowed me to download that troublesome Visual Studio that would neither update, repair, nor uninstall on Windows 7.

I wanted a new, fresh thread. Not a stale, old one. :-)
