Embedding webm/gifv/mp4
« on: October 04, 2015, 04:23:13 PM »
A lot of image hosting websites are starting to compress gifs into webm/gifv/mp4 videos - which are much smaller in file size, higher in quality and flexible in length, size and looping.
I know of many forums who have enabled embedding those types of videos, specifically some using SMF.
I think it would be a great thing to enable, will make the gif thread a heck of a lot faster to load with higher quality animations, and will put us one step forward into the future.

Well if they're compressing from gifs, they can't be higher quality than the gif. A heck of a lot smaller though, granted.

Is this what facebook, for example, has been doing lately? The "gifs" don't load til they are on your screen, that's nice too.

Well, compressing GIFs is one way, but people started uploading actual videos or webms instead of GIFS and then those sites also convert those to gifs for the convenience, but also webms/gifvs/etc.
Those turn into enormous gifs, though.

So to be clear, are you asking that you are allowed to hotlink to these items, or do you want to upload them into your post?  The first is a maybe, the second is a no.

Embedding as in hotlinking, yes.

Like we use:

Code: [Select]
[img]http://i.imgur.com/MVoW97w.gif[/img]
for images, let us use:

Code: [Select]
[video]http://i.imgur.com/MVoW97w.webm[/video]
for videos.

Here's a relevant HTML example for the tag:

Code: [Select]
<div class="video-container" style="width: auto; height: auto;">
   <video preload="auto" autoplay="autoplay" muted="muted" loop="loop" width="auto" height="auto">
      <source src="http://zippy.gfycat.com/{SIMPLETEXT}.webm" type="video/webm" />
      <source src="http://fat.gfycat.com/{SIMPLETEXT}.webm" type="video/webm" />
      <source src="http://giant.gfycat.com/{SIMPLETEXT}.webm" type="video/webm" />
      <source src="http://i.imgur.com/k3zUa1H.mp4" type="video/mp4" />
      Your browser doesn't seem to support the video tag or the webm format. Maybe there's a plugin for that? <a href="http://gfycat.com/{SIMPLETEXT}">View Source Video</a>
   </video>
</div>

Give me a working hotlink and I'll fiddle with it while I'm cooking Turkey today.

Thanks.
Also found this in the code from an open-sourced SFM forum which supports video embedding:

Code: [Select]

array(
'tag' => 'video',
'type' => 'unparsed_content',
'content' => '<video controls autoplay loop muted style="max-width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 10px 10px 0;" ><source src="$1" /></video>',

Source is here, line 1600.

Those links you gave me don't seem to work here, even if I put them directly as a URL in the browser.  Comes back as a 404.

Weird, work fine for me.
How about this:

Code: [Select]
https://giphy.com/gifs/EM0HdkC2QnKuY/html5
https://giphy.com/gifs/EM0HdkC2QnKuY/html5
or

Code: [Select]
https://media.giphy.com/media/EM0HdkC2QnKuY/giphy.mp4
https://media.giphy.com/media/EM0HdkC2QnKuY/giphy.mp4

Yes, there's something with the embedding that is causing it.  I can turn off that particular piece, but I can't get it to actually stream from the sites you're linking to.
