I need to upgrade the hardware in my work laptop. Mainly graphics card, memory and hard drive. I was wondering if maybe you guys had some thoughts on what i should choose? My boss is relatively generous with this kind of thing because a slow computer that sometimes crashes is more expensive than buying new hardware. I know that some of you will tell me to upgrade to a stationary computer but its not an option. I use the computer mainly for 3D-CAD (AutoCAD and Microstation) and FEM-calculations.  Ill post the specs of the computer below.

Is that the laptop you want to replace? If so that's hard to beat.

Yeah I know it's good but there are improvements that can be made. Solid state drives, more memory.

Yeah I know it's good but there are improvements that can be made. Solid state drives, more memory.
I assumed your drive WAS solid state.
Definitely go SSD, only improvement that'll really make you feel it.

Is it possible to make an upgrade to the graphics you think? I've heard it usually is problematic in laptops.

If you are having trouble with the laptop's speed, try cleaning up the software's and registry. Uninstall unused programs an defragment the Drives.

You could always upgrade the NVIDIA cards to this generation M5000M cards.

That machine does appear to have an SSD.  I dont think they make 250gb mechanical drives anymore LOL your specs say SCSI but its actually an SSD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820329003   your storage drive is not but you could plug an external SSD into the laptop to use as a working drive. you mite gain a little performance.

I know of one Laptop by Asus that can be upgraded to 32g of ram but you would sacrifice a Quadro for a high end gaming G force, that mite not be a good Idea for CAD

How well is the laptops OS optimized for the work you are doing?, eliminating all processes but the work at hand could help but again not by much. What you need is duel xenon system with 64gigs of ram or more and a Quadro m6000 or two.

If you dont mind me asking what are the issues with using a real workstation?

If you need to be able to work at both home and the office then purchase two workstations or network your office computer to make it accessible over the internet.

I have the need of a "faster than laptop" workstation being mobile and my solution its to push around a large cart. Its heavy and a pain in the ass but it ties in with my job. Sometimes I dont bother unloading it from my Transit Van and work in there.

You should never defrag an SSD,

Can you actually upgrade anything on a laptop other than memory and the harddrive?
