Is it possible to have my forum account removed, and to sign up anew, and to start from a blank slate?

My advice is that you don't need to do that at all.  If you make an effort to interact with people differently, everyone will respond and what's even better they'll notice and respect your personal growth.

On the other hand changing your name, if you don't think anything you've done before was problematic and was the cause of the grief you got, won't change a thing.

I'm afraid this is not possible.  From The Rules:

Yes, and as with all name changes, it would be publicly announced in the appropriate thread.

You could go for something disarming like 'Professor Barkington' and make your avatar a dog smoking a pipe.  Then if you give people shit they'll just mentally associate you with an adorable pipe-smoking dog.
