I had some time to kill so ended up on a beach on the Colonial Parkway
Saw this. I think it is an old rusted mine but maybe some kind of buoy.
It was relatively close to the Naval Weapon Station that I think started as a mine station.

I kayaked out to the New Point Comfort Lighthouse and got a few pictures.

that's cool. is it a wooden plug in the center of the photo? I feel like mines can stay around for a long time. is it only because it was up on the shore and exposed to oxygen that it corroded so badly?

Really is hard to know. . . .I looked on the web and there are pictures of rusted mines that look very similar to what I found. Don't have any clue how long it had been there either.

I found the mine (I think it was a mine at least) near Poley Point on the York River. It is just a few miles from Naval Weapon Station Yorktown.
