I've discovered a whole pile of new music in my 40s, including metal, house and dubstep.

Van Halen.

I totally understand why they were a massively popular band a couple decades ago.

I never liked them.  Even at the height of their popularity.
Well.  There it is.

Their fans are lying when they say they love them.  They just can't find a better band.

I enjoy a handful of their songs, but I wouldn't call myself a fan of the band. the VH edition of Guitar Hero was kind of amazing, "Panama" is hella fun to play. also, the only real Van Halen was when Diamond Dave was with them, as Bobcat Goldthwait would say, I'm "not down with Van Hagar".

Led Zeppelin.
Michael Jackson.

100% in agreement, yes, and hell to the naw.  How can you not like MJ?

Anyways for my list:

Rush.
Phish
Ornette Coleman
The Grateful Dead.

I always detested them.
I graduated HS in 1985 when they were probably at their peak.

Eddie is certainly a guitar player who was a real game changer--I just never liked his sound and I hated the band's whole image. Hard rock for a toothpaste commercial. Their lyrics were always irritating to me as well. Yeah, Dave, I get it, you are banging hot girls all the time, that is so awesome for you.

All of that sort of stuff, the poppy "hard" rock stuff from the mid-late 80s.  Loved it when I was 12-15.  I enjoy it now 100% for the way it makes me feel 12-15 again for a couple minutes, and 0% for any intrinsic qualities.  I can tell because there were a few bands that weren't that big in my region that were part of that wider movement that don't do anything for me now, the way that the particular ones that were big for me do.

Watch me.  However, I do still adore the Jackson 5ive.

I mean, the Off the Wall and Thriller albums are only the greatest pop albums in the history of pop, so you know...

For me, hmm... I do feel like I can get behind most kinds of music that I "get", so this might be hard.

Rush (I appreciate that their music is complex but Geddy Lee sounds like a gerbil witch)
Eminem (I mean, I get that a lot of rap is misogynistic and there are points where he makes some brave choices in talking about his mom or whatever but, like, even on that song "Roman's Revenge" he does with Nikki Minaj, while I adore the crap out of that song I have to skip past his parts to get back to Nikki)

That's all I can think of for now...

trying for years to like Dreamtheater, on paper they should be my ideal band.

This is part of why I don't like Pandora.  Often the thing that attracts me to a song is subtle and just bweing in the same genre as another is not enough.
