When is the last time Nicholas Cage has been in a good movie?
« on: February 25, 2017, 01:59:34 PM »
I was reading reviews of USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage and it looks like it is panned.
Before this, there was the remake of Left Behind which he starred in.

So curious, what is the last good movie he has been in?

I liked Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009).

I liked him in Kick Ass (2010). Before that, Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) -- awful but entertaining, and Bringing Out the Dead (1999) --weird movie that I found engaging; thought he was pretty good in it, playing a dude losing his mind.

Even there, how much of that was "man, Nicholas Cage is finally in a good movie" and how much of that is "oh my god Werner Herzog is f'ing insane and so is Nicholas Cage and THEY ARE IN A MOVIE TOGETHER AND IT IS BASICALLY AS 100% INSANE AS I WANTED IT TO BE EXCEPT NOT ENOUGH BEES"?

If the criteria are actually not just "Cage movie I liked because he was Insane Nicholas Cage and I love Insane Nicholas Cage in all things" but "movie that was decent in its own right that Cage actually did a good job of acting in instead of just being looney tunes for 2 hours"... Yeah I'm at a loss, there, Slick. I actually felt bad for him after seeing how many recent movies of his I'd never heard of.

I liked him in Adaptation (2002) (!).

It can be fun to see him go full blown weird, but Id say that almost any movie where he makes that choice, its a bad choice because the choice overshadows whatever else is happening.
A typical cage performance distracts from the story and so I think heneeds to be kept on a tight leash unless the director is content for the film to be viewed as an oddity.
Even in Kickass (which I love) his delivery of dialogue while his character was burning was pretty distracting and subtracted some of the drama from that scene for me.

Another vote for Adaptation.  Cage played a pair oddball  twins while Meryl Streep played a New Yorker writer.  Lots of plot twists and great writing.
I couldn't sit through "Gone in Sixty Seconds".

I just watched Oliver Stone's SNOWDEN which I thought was pretty good and Cage is in that.

Adaptation was good.

I haven't seen "Joe" 2013 but it has 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and looks like the kind of role Cage can do well.  He's been in several movies a year for the last 20ish years.  There's probably a dozen good movies in there and 2 or 3 great performances.

This, he can be quite good if the the director can restrain him.
