Pre 1970 movies you like
« on: February 25, 2017, 04:34:28 PM »
Inspired by some of the previous threads

Just curious what movies before 1970 that you really like?

I would put Errol Flynn's Robin Hood and Mark of Zorro on that list.
Captain Blood is alright but a pale imitation of the book.
Sink the Bismark is pretty good as well.

Boy.  Not much that I'd file under really like.  Plenty of them are just fine, especially with the caveat "for the time" attached.  Lots from the 70s, not much from before then.

I don't watch a lot of movies, and there are very few "old" movies that I actually like. But I very much enjoyed Harvey (1950).

It's a vehicle for Jimmy Stewart to be Jimmy Stewart, but it is just so very well made and performed. An outstanding piece of period cinema.

Dave nailed it, I agree with every movie on his list. I did have to google Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid though. sure enough 1969, I thought it was a lot closer to The Sting.

My fav is Alfred Hitchcock's 'Rich and Strange' (UK) / 'East of Shanghai' (USA), which I just serendipitously happened upon one night.

I also quite like a lot of Marilyn films, but my fav is 'Some like it Hot'.

As mentioned, 'Seven Samuri' and quite a few of Akira Kurasawa's films as well as some old Disney films like 'Snow White'.

I also quite like parts of some of the old musicals like 'Singing in the Rain' because I love technicolor and the production for the dance scenes is quite amazing.

Metropolis
East of Eden
Casablanca
eh pretty much what tassie dave said.

I didn't watch many 1950s era movies until a few years ago, and I mainly started because they were what was available streaming legally.  But I've been pleasantly surprised.  The classics are called classics for a reason.
I disavow anyone in the movement involved in any illegal, unethical, sexist, or racist behavior. However, I don't have the energy or time to investigate each person and case, and a lack of individual disavowals for each incident should not be construed as condoning such behavior.

A few Akira Kurosawa samurai flicks
