Seems pretty unlucky to beat Hodgkin’s disease only to come down with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma decades later.

Paul Allen, Microsoft co-founder, dies at 65 - Los Angeles Times

Quote
Paul Allen, the taciturn computer programmer who founded the software behemoth Microsoft with Bill Gates when he was 22 and walked away eight years later with what would become one of the largest fortunes in the history of American capitalism, died Monday in Seattle. He was 65.
The cause was complications of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, according to his company Vulcan Inc.

There's been a lot of press lately about the owner of the Portland Trail Blazers dying. I also saw the co-founder of Microsoft died on the same day. It took me until today realize that they were the same person...

I am not a smart man.
It's always more complicated than that.

Amazingly, the owner of the Seattle Seahawks also died on the same day. How often does that happen?

RIP Paul Allen.

Damn. Knew it was imminent and 95 is a nice long run (but is it ever long enough?) but this is still the rare celebrity death that hits me. Briefly "met" The Man at a few comic conventions over the decades and have an autograph first edition of his Origins of Marvel Comics. I was born July 1962. The first issue of Fantastic Four that started the Marvel Age of Comics came out just under a year earlier in August of '61. I literally grew up with Stan's writings and his creations/co-creations.  His writing was a major influence in the shaping of my moral compass. When I as younger and briefly fancied becoming a writer, either for comics, "real" books or both, I emulated his style to a great degree (along with Ray Bradbury, I was quite the hybrid).

Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko the Trifecta of Titans who birthed The Marvel Universe are all gone now. The world is a little less wondrous today.

RIP Stan Lee. You will be remembered and your work cherished for generations.

It’s Time to Cast a Black Stan Lee

Now that his part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to be recast, we need to do the right thing and make sure a person of color takes over the role.

The book version of The Princess Bride is amazing.

His autobiography "Adventures in the Screen Trade" is one of the two best film books I've ever read.

Everybody who cultivated a big, fat, patriotic boner over John McCain's alleged war heroics ought to listen to the latest Dollop.

George H.W. Bush did something I highly respect when, in 1990, he agreed to a compromise that raised taxes despite his "read my lips" campaign pledge. It showed that he took fiscal responsibility seriously, and that he put the country's finances before his own political expedience—and it may well have cost him reelection. Whatever else one thinks of him, in that moment, at least, he was a statesman.
