Fresh Vegetable Prices?
« on: April 26, 2017, 01:02:56 PM »
I went to the local grocery store and heads of lettuce had doubled in price from ~$1 to ~$2.
I also noted that broccoli went from $1.50 a pound to $2.50 a pound.
Anybody else notice anything like that?

I don't even look at the prices. I just look at how fresh the veggies are. Fresh veggies are a necessity, so why fret about how much I'm paying?

I've also notice, and suffered, the higher prices.

One item weird though. . . While the grocery store went way up, I went to a Walmart a few days later and prices were unchanged.
Basically $1 for a head of lettuce and $1.50 per pound for broccoli.

A huge company like Wal-Mart probably has longer-term contracts to hedge against just this sort of thing.  Their prices will undoubtedly rise, too, of higher prices persist, but perhaps more slowly.

Food Lion is not that small though with over 1000 stores

You're talking more than an order of magnitude of difference, though.

So we have some pretty good economists at the USDA:

Several I've talked to about this issue say the short term increase in price of fresh vegetables might be extinction behavior before the inevitable drop in prices due to decrease exports.

Whenever I visit the US, I always look at food prices (I guess because I am a provider).  It was easy this year, only to multiply the price per pound b 3 for a good $NZ/kg estimate.

I noted that vegetables, meat and dairy was incredibly expensive compared to home.  I really would ave thought the huge supermarkets could provide produce more cheaply.  Apples really struck me as expensive.  The range was impressive, though, at the City Market where I shopped at.

I didn't look too deeply at the centre of the grocery aisles, except that Lara bars are about half the price as in NZ.
