Scientific sightseeing

Don't know if this topic ever came up before, but when on holiday I look for interesting scientific visits whenever possible, like scientific museums, observatories or space centers.

I'm planning to make a roadtrip from Denver to Portland, Oregon in August and September. I'm going to see the solar eclipse underway, and I'm wondering what other scientific visits I can make.

I've already found these sites with lists of observatories per state:
http://www.go-astronomy.com/observatories.htm
http://www.observingsites.com/

I might have some time to make a detour to the state Washington. I saw they do tours at the LIGO observatory in Richland, but unfortunately not when I'm around.

Any other visits you'd recommend?
