That joke only works if you pronounce "epoch" homophonously with "epic", which in an Australian accent I very much do not. They're very different sounding words.

I don't think I've ever heard an American pronounce that word as "epic" and I've lived here nearly 40 years.  Granted, it doesn't come up in conversation very often, but I've always said "epoque" and never had anybody ask me what I meant.  Maybe it's regional.

Only in some parts of the country

Granted that there are a lot of quite different accents in America - almost as many as there are in Britain. Australian accents are a lot more homogenous.

Not all of them. The one about the Swedish navy putting barcodes on their ships so that they can Scandinavian seems to work regardless of accent.
