I'd do either.  I'll do what the players want.

I like the idea, but I don't know how many games of D&D I can have at once. Maybe if I quit my job?

Here is the thing about Gamma World 1st Ed.  It is VERY Theater of the Mind.  There are often no ranges on mutations or weapons.  Movement is ill defined, especially in combat.  Everything is super loosy-goosy as befits a '75 era RPG.  So if we play on Roll20 there will be very little setup - especially since I won't have character sheets.

You know, I really really hate the term "theatre of the mind". Where I come from, we just call that "roleplaying".

I take "Theater of the Mind" to mean pure talking with very few, if any visual aids.

How do you guys feel about Top Secret? We were talking about that on Discord last weekend.

I think that could be a lot of fun. Played it a couple times as a kid.

I played it once and it wasn't that great for me. I'd give it another try. We did have the SkeptiFate game that felt kind of like top secret.

It means "without miniatures". I've never used miniatures for any of my games. I've played one or two games that used them in a loose, casual sort of way, but focusing too much on the miniatures makes it feel to me too much like Warhammer.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind miniatures wargames. But they're not D&D.

When my brother, our friends and I played as kids in the early '80s, our only visual aids were basic paper materials. We'd map the dungeons out in pencil on graph paper, or use a large hex map for outdoors adventures. Later on we started using minis, but we never went in for dungeon tiles or anything like that. Our minis were just a novelty, never a major component of our game play.

But the history of D&D is very much rooted in the wargaming tradition. If you talk to any of the old-timers who played D&D in the 1970s, it actually started out with an emphasis on miniatures.

I've read that the "Theatre of the Mind" style of play was pioneered by some college students from Southern California. According to some accounts, some SoCal D&D groups would even show up dressed in costume.
