New Roll20 Game With Y'all - Old School GAMMA WORLD
« on: September 01, 2017, 06:29:14 pm »
UPDATE:  Next Game 1/20/18 @ 3pm eastern.

We have settled on Gamma World - old school style.  We are playing a mix of 1e and 2e with a bit of Metamorphosis Alpha thrown in.  They are all so very compatible anyway, it just makes sense to strip mine the three for all the best bits.

Drop in and join us.  Gamma World is a pretty fun game, but it is very old school, in that it can be unbalanced and harsh.  Your character can die easily, and it is rules lite - ridiculously so*.  If you are up for that kind of experience then come on by!

*1e GW has 3 pages devoted to combat and adventuring - half of which is charts.

OK - A while back I mentioned an interest in running a Roll20 game for folks who were interested.  At the time I proposed running Storm King's Thunder.  Well the time has come.  I feel good enough about Roll20 that I think I can run a game.

Old now Irrelevant Discussion
That said, I feel like I should throw it back to y'all to see what you would like to play.  So if you are interested in playing, let me know, and let me know what Adventure Path interests you the most.

5e Adventure Paths - These will require the least work for me.  None of them go to lvl 20.  Most of them will be somewhat to very familiar to some of all of the players.  They are all linked so there can be some continuity if we continue on with other characters.  Set in the Forgotten Realms.

Tyranny of Dragons - Hoard of the Dragon Queen & The Rise of Tiamat | 1-15
Elemental Evil - Princes of the Apocalypse | 1-15
Rage of Demons - Out of the Abyss | 1-14
Curse of Strahd - Curse of Strahd | 1-10
Storm King's Thunder - Storm King's Thunder | 1-11

Paizo Adventure Paths  - You can read summaries for all of paths on Paizo's siteThey generally are well reviewed - I have starred the ones that are commonly identified as standouts.  The best tend to be thematically coherent - meaning better / focused character builds.  They will be a lot of work for me to convert - as such I will likely rely on the players to tell me if an encounter is off base.  The earlier ones tend to go past level 20 (that is OK in 5e for a few levels)  I have no familiarity with Paizo's campaign world - I might port it?  In order of release they are:

Rise of the Runelords*
Curse of the Crimson Throne*
Second Darkness
Legacy of Fire
Council of Thieves*
Kingmaker*
Serpent's Skull
Carrion Crown*
Jade Regent
Skull & Shackles
Shattered Star
Reign of Winter
Wrath of the Righteous
Mummy's Mask
Iron Gods
Giantslayer
Hell's Rebels
Hell's Vengeance
Strange Aeons
Ironfang Invasion
Ruins of Azlant
War for the Crown
Return of the Runelords*

Dungeon Magazine Adventure Paths  - More conversion, although much of this work is done on the web already.  They go all the way up to 20th, or sometimes 30th.  They were released in a serial format, and tend to be less coherent - more episode of the week.  Set in Greyhawk!!!!  (except the last one)

Shackled City
Age of Worms
Savage Tide -  Isle of Dread & Demogorgon!!!!  I like this one.
Scales of War - Goes to lvl 30 in 4e.

Way Way Old School  - Much conversion.  Much Nostalga

No way I can list them all, so you make a suggestion.  But we are talking about things like the Slavers series, or the real classic giants-underdark-drow-lolth series.  Or the Night Below campaign.  Or maybe one of the Planescape campaigns.  That's about as far as I would venture I think.  I don't think I am up for converting Dark Sun or Spelljammer.

OK, I haven't played D&D since I was 12 with the 2nd edition. What do I need in order to get up to speed to join in? I think I'm in but I feel like I am more of a newbie now than I was at 12 with this whole online thing.

Lessee.  To get up to speed on 5e I'd read the free rules pdf.  5e is pretty rules lite, and very GM deferent, which harkens back to 2nd edition.  Which means there is a lot of Gm ruling at the table, and hopefully the GM going with the "Rule of Cool".  Don't worry about on-line play.  There is a learning curve, but after one and a half sessions, I felt comfortable enough with what was going on.  There is an online play tutorial to push you a bit out the learning curve if you have the time.

I really want to say that I'd be down for this, but my record at keeping up with online games is not good.

I like the idea, but I dont know about the time commitment that is necessary - particularly having regard to time zones.

OK - As I read up on advice on running Storm Kings Thunder, one thing that keeps cropping up is:  Tell you players that running away is OK, and that they are supposed to be WAY overmatched in the beginning.  Keep that in mind if that kind of play bugs you.

What would you say to running a Gamma World campaign?

I only played GW once as a kid and I recall having a lot of fun with it.

But unfortunately most of our friends were way into the swords and sorcery genre at the time, so it didn't stick.

I have the new edition based on 4e. I've never played it, but it looks like fun.

4e? Ugh.

But I'd be down to play anyway.

I just love playing tabletop RPGs. It'd be nice if we could all get together to play in person. Maybe someday we could all meet at a convention and get a game going...

So yeah, let's set a schedule to play.

I'm available any weekday except Wednesdays and Thursdays, or any days when my Roll20 campaign is going. Sunday could work for me.

If I ran Gamma World it would be 1st through 4th Max, but probably 1st.  1st is better for a one shot.  4th is better for a campaign.

Would you rather do D&D or Gamma World?

I'm already involved in 2 D&D games so I'd rather play GW, but I'm fine with either.

I'd do either.  I'll do what the players want.
