What's that thingy?
« on: September 26, 2017, 02:10:39 PM »
On a tangent from another thread. I thought there might already be a visual counterpart to whatsthatnoisy, but I did not see one (didn't look very carefully).

Maybe this could go like this: a picture post, zero or more answer posts, and then a confirmation or a reveal if no correct answer in a week ?

Picture one:

Matchbox on the left for scale.

Is that the whole thing or just part of a thing that might have another thing attached? I feel like the notches at the top are more than ornamental.

Oh yes, an initial clue might have been appropriate.

Could be a radius stand, to bend metal to a set degree or to check a bend. The top is graduated if that's true.

Nah - the tang has the wrong cross section, the pommel is too small for its length, and the guard is completely the wrong shape. Also, the pommel and guard are rarely integral with the tang in real swords.

I'm thinking more like a blacksmith's raising spike - the baseplate appears to have notches allowing it to be pinned down to a heavy block. I've no idea what the function of the design on the upper section is though - it could be purely ornamental.

Upper notches do have function. Any other part will reveal the usage immediately.

The base reminds me of a car jack. There's just not enough visible for me to see how it would function as one.

An old craft, predates cars by many orders of magnitude. Related though, in a way.
Googling the item... that adjustable top joint is not so common.
