I have been avoiding reading up on politics and painting in the evening instead. Although, I got sucked back in this week.

Inspired by my Solar eclipse vacation to Tennesse.

Because it was an awesome run.

Various paintings playing on the constellation theme.

Wow, that's some beautiful watercolor work. You have pretty good control over your paint.

Damn, how you do that?
I tried watercolor once and was miserable. Everything was mud.

These are great! (and very sale-able)

I particularly like the dragons. Dragons are cool. I have several (not made by me).

Thanks :)
That is what happens when you put wet complimentary colors (colors across from each other on the color wheel) next to each other they make mud.
If you want to give it another go. I advise picking up a copy of 30 Minute Watercolors. Or watch the Frugal Crafter on Youtube. She does lots of easy to follow tutorials.

Art is more persistence than talent IMO. So I would encourage you to try again.

May I ask a question or two?
How large are the originals? How did you digitise them- scan or photos?
Do you use masking fluid?
Are the stars spattered in a different medium?
I really like your technique. I have been getting back into watercolours recently.  I hope you don't mind me asking.

hmmm..... Sunblock, Jupiter, and Saturn are probably 4x6in the larger ones are 9x12in or 10x14in. I have an Epson Perfection V500 bed scanner. Which I got on ebay for $50 the box had never been opened by the previous owner. Really to take a decent quality photo you need an SLR, lighting, and a tripod right now I just don't want to plunk down that kind of cash. I usually scan in at a high dpi 700 or 1200 and create a tiff file this way I can make a small image large if I want.  I use gimp to clean up images and stitch together images that are too large to scan in one go. The Jupiter painting has very clean edges because I used gimp to clean up my circle. Then I resize as need and export as jpg for posting on a blog, twitter, here or whatever. I export a png for things I want to print because that format keeps the layer data.

I used masking fluid on the bears. But, I don't think I used it  on the others.

The stars are Amsterdam or Coptic White ink. Sometimes I use gouache but I prefer opaque white ink. Basically any opaque paint will work I have seen people use fluid acrylic with good results as well.

Thanks ! I don't mind answer questions. I just don't get on every day anymore so my responses can be slow.

You inspired me. This is part of a series of illustrations I am doing for a personal project. I liked your silhouettes and stars.

This is a photo in bad lighting. I have an a4 scanner but this is an A3 image. I also tend to use 600 to 1200 dpi tiff files when digitising.
my stars are in acrylic. The rainbow was painted and touched up in coloured pencil (Derwent Coloursoft - they are so lovely with deep vibrant colours but they go down really quick).

This image was essentially a painted sketch for a later, more refined version.

:) That is a lovely seen. I like how the river is almost running out of the ballon.

I really like ColourSoft I have 5 I bought open stock. They also seem to not get that awful wax bloom some pencils do.  I would like to replace all of my Prismacolors with them eventually. I also love Dewert’s Inktense which are water soluble.
