He is a modern great who stayed strong for most of his carrer.  And so young too.  Of a heart attack, apparently.

Just read about this elsewhere
"Give me the storm and tempest of thought and action, rather than the dead calm of ignorance and faith. Banish me from Eden when you will; but first let me eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge."

I am upset about this one.  Damn the Torpedoes was one of the first albums I bought for myself.  I loved all of it so.

I also loved this.  In the midst of sentimental songs of mourning, Tom took a different tone.

"There's only one rule that I know of, babies—God damn it, you've got to be kind."  Kurt Vonnegut
"You can bet your last money it's all gonna be a stone gas, honey."  Don Cornelius
"Wow! You spark up my entire thinking faculty."  A scammer/bot on a dating site

I liked him best when he was being all moody, spooky and weird.

I don't know why, but I was never a big fan. Which is weird because if you ask Petty and I to make lists of favorite tunes, etc, we would have a LOT in common.

I did see him live back when he and the Heartbreakers acted as Bob Dylan's backup band and they did a split bill.

It was my first Dylan concert and didn't know more than 2-3 songs  (Dylan will pull all sorts of things in a set list with little regard to their amount of airplay--and will change arrangements of songs--sometimes radically).

What ended up impressing me most was the Heartbreaker band. Not a lot of flash or extended soloing, but very, very tight and very locked in a groove.

I was just watching Martin Scorsese's bio of George Harrison, Petty is interviewed several times. Seemed like a good enough guy.
