Cartoon Caption Contest - The New Yorker
« on: January 23, 2018, 03:17:01 PM »
I've entered The New Yorker's cartoon caption contest many times but have never made it into the top three submissions -- the finalists. When shown the three finalists, selecting the winning caption often seems so obvious. What is it that the caption contest tests?

Does the image below suggest a caption to you?

(If you were to enter this week's contest, would you let us know your submission after the entry period closes at the end of January 28th?)

All scans and workups so far remain inconclusive, so I brought in a new team to try a taste test.

The finalists were:

“It's a miracle that you survived. Your house was totally devoured.”
Submitted by David Rosania, Rye Beach, N.H.

   “Have you tried icing it?”
Submitted by Xiwen Wang, Williamstown, Mass.

“We'd like to keep you here for further tasting.”
Submitted by Gary Borislow, Johns Creek, Ga.

I like yours better.

The "icing" one is good.

Icing it was pretty good.
I see now I didn't keep mine brief enough as the third got to the same point much more quickly than mine.

I disavow anyone in the movement involved in any illegal, unethical, sexist, or racist behavior. However, I don't have the energy or time to investigate each person and case, and a lack of individual disavowals for each incident should not be construed as condoning such behavior.

My favorite is “It's a miracle that you survived. Your house was totally devoured.”

Have they announced a winner?

I used to subscribe to and read The New Yorker. This was before the internet was much of a thing. Magazines were printed on paper and mailed through the post. I think I quit when I moved to Mexico and did my best to immerse myself in Spanish, which lasted for six years, for about the last half of which I was reading only Spanish. Somehow, I never returned to the magazine.

The good news is we successfully removed all the gluten, but we couldn't do anything about the high fructose corn syrup.
