If they've come up with some uniquely efficient way to suck CO2 from the atmosphere and produce a permanent substance from it, I'd forget about the materials aspect and ask how much it would cost to remove a trillion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere with this method.

But I worry that this is another one of those things that is very promising in a small setting, and then there's a significant barrier to scaling it up.

It’s not big as a solution to global warming but it could be big as a cheap way to make carbon nano tubes which would be way cool
