It's insane that we have to bring the evidence to show the downsides of corporal punishment, instead of demanding to see evidence that there's a huge benefit to it to justify threatening and beating kids into line.

Don't misinterpret this as support of corporal punishment but I came across a web site on parenting advice which suggested removing privileges as an alternative to spanking. In support of this alternative the site then says "...spanking stings for a minute or two, taking away a privilege hurts longer."  Maybe the "hurts longer" is just an unfortunate choice of words but if spanking (not to be confused with beating) only hurts for a couple of minutes and removing privileges hurts longer it made me wonder if there are studies of possible damage to children caused by alternatives to spanking.

Re: punishment and the off-hand "time-out" comment, this technique seems to be used punitively more often than not, see: https://www.alfiekohn.org/parenting/punishment.htm

The focus should probably be on teaching, and promoting good behavior, rather than on what are the best ways to punish someone you have the responsibility to care for.
