Reading this is proof that yes, this forum has improved with regards to the sexism thing.  Whether it was by enough is up to debate, but improved, yes.

We used to have a boobs (or tits? can't recall) thread...

Yeah, that's a classic. There was a member that thought that a Reef Tank = chick magnet (I can't remember the name, even thought I should, he was a card.)

Is it time to update some of the special tags? I just rolled through 1984, and forgot to get a screen cap of it.

Wait until you get to 2001: An SGU Odyssey...

I remember a very heated discussion about the Explicit section in which people vehemently defended their desire to post nude images.

Finally, I have matriculated from Reef Tank Owner.

I'm not a doctor, I'm just a guy who has done a ton of research into diet and nutrition.

To be perfectly fair to the other side (of which I was not a member), the argument was less "but I want moar bewbs!" and more, "this place should not curtail the free expression of its members when that speech does no harm, and nude photos aren't harmful."  I believe the main line of argumentation that carried the day was that there may be nothing inherently wrong with consensual photos of nude women posted to titillate other members, but that the conversation around it was very off-putting to many female members and would-be members too.  Not trying to reopen the discussion, just wanted to clarify that the argument was slightly more elevated than some wanting nudes and some not.

Fair enough - you appear to remember it a bit differently than I do, but that's okay. Different perspectives and all that. I bugged out of the conversation pretty early.

If I recall correctly, wasn't there also a push to have beefcake pictures as well...to sort of counterballance the boobs?

I was fine with the boobs forum being there, because it was all adult and consensual, but to be honest it didn't make much sense.  There are plenty of porn sites all over the internet, why bother cultivating one here?  I didn't really frequent it, but I did make jokes about its very existence.

I think the prevaling thought was while there is nothing wrong with legal nudes, they don't have much to do with science, skepticism, or the podcast to which this forum is associated with.
I disavow anyone in the movement involved in any illegal, unethical, sexist, or racist behavior. However, I don't have the energy or time to investigate each person and case, and a lack of individual disavowals for each incident should not be construed as condoning such behavior.

The objectification of women is the last thing the already oppressively male-dominated sceptical scene needs to embrace. Getting rid of that shite was a very good decision.
