I live on an island that lost 32 species of birds after humans arrived 700 years ago... and that was before Europeans arrived.  Extinction of native species has gone on apace.  Ourtwo species of bats (the only land mammals here) are not faring all that well, even with help.

Not only animals, but plants as well are getting the chop.  Mind you, we have about 3000 indigenous plants and maybe 30,000 imported species.

In the latest SGU episode, they spoke a bit on how the insect collapse might not really be. It seems like the study was cherry-picked in that it only included studies that suggested a decline of insects, and then argued for that decline. They also spoke about that insects are quite poorly documented, and therefore it is hard to verify that there has been any decline.

What is your thought on that?

(I guess this subject would in a way be more appropriate for the thread about that episode, but that thread is currently about the CIA.)

If global warming is real then how come I just felt this chill down my spine?
