MANIAC (Probably spoilers at some point but not yet)
« on: September 21, 2018, 10:58:09 PM »
WTF did I just watch?

Maniac on Netflix.  I know what I'm doing for the next 9 hours.  Its a really strange blend of alternate reality 1980s, I think.

Owen (Jonah Hill) has schizophrenia, are we seeing through his eyes? Which parts are real and which parts are not?  He joins a drug trial.

I see this is a remake of a Norwegian television series and I just stumbled on it without knowing anything, after watching the first episode and reading the wiki I still don't know anything but I want to watch more.

Lets keep the spoilers hidden for a while.

I watched through them all, really enjoyed the ride, but feel like I missed something huge in the resolution, I felt thoroughly unsatisfied.

Was going to pass on this since the trailer didn't do anything for me and I can't stand Jonah Hill. But based on positive buzz on the net (such as this thread) I've decided to check it out (there's nothing else currently to occupy my time until the third season of Man in the High Castle anyway). Watched the first wo episodes so far. Not exactly loving it, but intrigued enough to continue . I'm wondering if this is set in a parallel world (that one BIG background difference in the New York harbor ) ...or if we open already in a drug induced mindscape....? (which is a big possibility given he story about Hill's character pet hawk...)

That statue stands out, as does the mix of 80's tech with robots cleaning the street.  Such a weird combo.

'The Future (circa 1975)' with some contemporary touches is a great aesthetic

The statue of "extra" Liberty

I admit I sure would like to know more about the background, what makes it "extra"? What is the current government system?  They leave a lot to the imagination.

Damn. That kind of puts a damper on my enthusiasm for the rest of the series (currently up to Ep. five). I thought the statue having hawk-like wings, the story of Hill's pet hawk, his reaction to a picture of a hawk during his screening test...I thought all that was leading up to some kind of pay-off.

Halfway thru episode six--playing in anoter widow as I type this--and my god is it awful. THe last two eps were pretty mediocre but this is terrible I still intend to slog thru to the Tolkein-ish episode and try to make the end. But the promise of the first two eps is proving false......

That's unfortunate. My wife and I just watched 1 and 2. The vibe is Brazil, but just barely keeping your shit together. I'll ride it out for at least a few more based on what I've seen so far.

After episode seven I am OUT. I just do not LIKE any of these people and don't care in the slightest if their problems are ever resolved. I really can't stand the leading doctor, his smoking too much love interest, or his mother played by Sally Field. It doesn't help that I don't particularly care for the gritty crime drama genre of films such as Goodfellas or The Departed which the last episode is based on. Or bad Drangonlance-type fantasy which was the other half of the episode.  And as I said in my first post, I've never cared for Jonah Hill. Emma Stone is cute, but not enough to keep watching even for just three remaining installments.

In e02 I rewound many times trying to comprehend the technobabble. It was like this:

"Oh... This is for nerds like me who have to explain technobabble to normies... This is what THEY feel like watching what I love..."

Instructive for me.
