Was Bre Payton death really caused by her antivaxxer lifestyle?
« on: December 30, 2018, 06:50:35 PM »
Bre Payton was found dead at 26, and it is said that she had meningitis and the flu. Can we say for sure that it was caused by the fact that she avoided her shots? Or it is still too early for us to say that? What information do we need for certainty? ( I'm asking to avoid the error of claiming the "irony" of this case,  and in the future someone could reveal that her death was caused by a pathogen not connected to the shots she avoided)

Yeah, I'm less concerned with causality than irony.  Strictly speaking, anyone who skipped their flu shot this year would've made equal contribution to their own demise.

edit:  Misread while skimming.  I've read that (1) she died of H1N1 and (2) this year's basic flu shot covers H1N1. Hence the immediate jump to claiming irony.

we would need to know that she did indeed avoid her shots, and that just because she had claims (from 2011) that'd suggest she was an anti-vaxxer she actually was.

Alternate Hypothesis:

Thanks. That's precisely the kind of thing I was talking about.  If this tragedy had another cause, we must avoid false positives and not 'Cry Wolf'. The antivax movement would use that against scientists and skeptics, increasing the chances of some parents not vaccinating their children.

Still, from everything that I've read, the hypothesis that she died because she didn't get the vaccine is by far the most likely. H1N1 could get very nasty on people that were not immunized.
