How do you pronounce "primer"?
« on: January 22, 2019, 04:44:05 PM »
When I listened to the most recent SGU episode, I learned that there are apparently two different pronounciations of this word, "primmer" and "praymer". How do you pronounce it? Is it related to different English versions (British, American, etc), or something else?

I always assumed it was pronounced "praymer". I didn't know the word could also pronounced in that other way.

Google found me https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/10036/why-is-primer-pronounced-with-a-short-i-sound. Evidently, both pronunciations are acceptable. I personally prefer the short "i". Primer like sinner.

When I hear "primer" with the long "i", I think of http://lmgtfy.com/?q=what+is+primer

Primer, something that primes you, so that you're primed.

"prEYEmer"

prEYEmer - same.

I know a lot of Americans say prIHmer. I find that odd, but comprehensible.

Long I. If it were pronounced with a short I, it would be spelled "primmer". Because that's what double consonants do - they make the preceding vowel short.

Imagine starting beginning readers off with such an obvious violation of the rules of phonetics as primer being pronounced primmer.

prEYEmer, obviously.

Certain American pronunciations violate a number of standard rules of English pronunciation. But where English is concerned, I have two rules: First: all rules have exceptions, including this one. Second: there are always more rules.

ETA: I didn't mean to imply that American English was unique in violating standard rules of pronunciation. I myself have always said "o-re-GA-no" rather than "o-REG-a-no" even though the former violates the rule that in most four syllable words, the emphasis is on the second syllable.

Primer, definitely, especially as there are several other uses of the same word, derived from the same root and spelled the same way being undisputedly pronounced with a long 'I'.  One doesn't start one's paint job with 'primmer' paint, nor does one push the 'primmer' bulb when starting a small engine.  In all three cases, we're talking about a thing that primes, and it is a primer.

ETA: 'praymer' is not a pronunciation of the word.

I'm sure he meant prEYEmer, and transliterated the phoneme the way a non-native English speaker from Northern Europe would.
