There's a whole other thread somewhere with opinions about the ads.

If 4% still means 4%, okay, but it seems weird to me that they could have a significant increase in regular payments and be further off from the goal if the relative increase in listenership is greater. How much are they spending on bandwidth vs. equipment, events, and feeding Jay?

Why do you feel like you need to see that information?

You would probably not believe how significant their bandwidth costs just to deliver the show are.

Not that I expect them to share this, but I think the overhead and revenue would be interesting.

Especially:
  • Average cost per listener -- overall and per new episode
  • Average revenue per listener (w/ breakdown) -- overall and per new episode

I agree with Soldier of FORTRAN that it would be interesting. But only as a curiosity. If I like a podcast enough that I'd feel bad if it went away, AND if I don't have reason to dislike the person(s) making the show, then I donate.

"Basically I have this very morbid idea . . . when I pass, I want to be put into a firework and shot across the sky over the Santa Barbara Ocean as my last hurrah. I want to be a firework, both living and dead. My boyfriend showed me a paragraph out of Jack Kerouac's book 'On the Road,' about people that are buzzing and fizzing and full of life and never say a commonplace thing. They shoot across the sky like a firework and make people go, 'Ahhh.' I guess that making people go 'ahhh' is kind of like my motto."

Oh yeah, totally joking.  I was  picking up on death imagery.  Then I thought, "holy shit this low-key maps to suicide bombing," and the song's been hilarious ever since.  Then I looked up the video and it's got people shooting fireworks from their bodies everywhere

Steve,

The song you mentioned that was about abuse was "We Are Young" by Fun.  It's a great song, if not disturbing.  I immediately knew which song you meant because I had the same reaction upon a close listen.  When I pointed it out to my kids, they initially denied it's clear descriptions of abuse, because they love the song.  Eventually they came around, when we discussed narrative pov vs a writers real actions.

Lyrics for reference.  They are dark - especially for an anthem.
Quote
Give me a second I
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State
My lover she's waiting for me just across the bar
My seat's been taken by some sunglasses asking about a scar, and
I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you're trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies, you know
I'm trying hard to take it back

Now where I come from
We don't let society tell us how it's supposed to be
-Uptown, Prince 👉

The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds
