Mnemonic Devices That Worked for You
« on: May 28, 2019, 02:00:12 PM »
I was able to instantly recall the mnemonic devices I learned 20+ years ago yesterday for  the basic seven levels of taxonomy (Kings Play Chess On Fine Grain Sand).

I can also easily recall a couple of math ones, such as:
Some Old Horse (Sine = Opposite/Hypotenuse)
Caught Another Horse (Cosine = Adjacent/Hypotenuse)
Taking Oats Away (Tangent = Opposite/Adjacent)

PEMDAS for order of operations

Any others instantly pop into your head years later?

DDSSHGB  or "DD-destroyer" "SS-submarine" and "HGB-heavy gun boat."*

From that I get
Doc
Dopey
Sneezy
Sleepy
Happy
Grumpy
and
Bashful.

Very important, that one. ;D

I also use "Chose-Hose" to avoid the "Chose-Choose" typo.

*That last one isn't strictly a USN designation, btw.

My mnemonic for remembering the order of the planets:

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.

The last because I learned it prior to 2006.

To remember which direction to move the clocks for Daylight savings (Start and Finish): Spring Forward, Fall Back

Stalactites cling tight to the ceiling. Stalagmites might grow up to meet them.

To remember the difference between Port and Starboard. Port and Left both have 4 letters

For First Aid response. DRS. ABCD (Doctors ABCD) Danger, Response, Send for Help, Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Defibrillation[/b]

Or is it Spring Back, Fall Forward? I can never remember which.

There's a little bit of port left in the bottle.

I don't need any of these, they are all instinctive now.  But I still remember.

WE will remember our West from East.

As far as remembering directions.  The road we lived on went north-south, and so I never had a problem with north and south.

But east-west I would always have to think for a minute.  And the nonsensical way I would think about it was "well, Newfoundland is that way, so that way must be east".  It's also 5000 miles across the country, so why could I remember that Newfoundland it that way, but not that east is that way?

From the Muppet movie, "Hey I've never seen the sun come up in the West?!" is how I used to remember which way the earth rotates. That and, "Half an hour later in Newfoundland."

Here's what I could never understand (and it's similar to the fall forward spring back issue). When you're talking about rotation, which is right and which is left? Is right clockwise? Is left clockwise? It was never clear to me.

Left and right only apply from the 9 o'clock position to the 3 o'clock position

Left is anti-clockwise. Right is clockwise.

I find lefty loosy and righty tighty confusing, as half the time I am on the opposite side or upside down to the nut, fitting etc that I'm working on which makes the mnemonic backwards.
or, as stated above, working on gas fittings which are reverse thread on purpose.

See if someone had told me that, I wouldn't have been as confused!
