Does anyone still play Dungeons and Dragons Online?
« on: August 20, 2019, 08:21:10 AM »
I started playing about a month ago, and I am having fun so far with the different quests.  Any tips, tricks or complaints?

I played from launch for about 3 years (I quit at just the time it became free to play).  It was fun.  Haven't looked back since I quit.

I still prefer face-to-face, though I have used Roll20 at times.

How deep can you get using free play?  Is any content paywall blocked?

You don't get the content of the books with the free roll20, but it is serviceable. Dnd beyond is a better system if you can pay.

Does different things. Beyond is a great automated character sheet and reference, but it doesn't give you the virtual tabletop, which I think is Roll20's focus.

That is, unless Beyond has added some major functionality since the last time I looked at it.

Roll20 also has the benefit of hosting many different game systems. Personally, I'd hesitate to use it for D&D without paying for additional content, but I'd absolutely use it to play something like Dungeon World.

I know. I've never played it, so we're having a small side discussion. Anyone can return to the OP at any time.

I had no idea it was a video game. Sorry to derail.

I have not played it since it came out.

There was a dungeon scene that payed homage to a picture in the original players handbook that I liked.

Gary Gygax had done some VO work that I really enjoyed.

Other than that I felt the game was boring and suffered from the same problems every other MMORPG seems to suffer from. Why do I have to grind out experience by hunting down 1000 furry rabbits or whatever other stupid creature is about in whatever section you happen to be running through. If I remember correctly xp was handed out based on quests but it didn't feel any different than every other game like it.  With the action fighting It never felt like I was using the D&D system when playing.

Has the game changed at all? Its been a long time.
